Going to try an experiment...

Well I had gotten into bonsai a bit, and gave it up after my mother in law killed my tree that I had worked 3 years on by knocking it over in our bushes and left it there to die...
:(

Okay so back to the point. There is a process (forget what it's called) where you start roots on a branch of a tree to cheat your way into a new tree. I think it'll work on a cane of a rose really well... sooooo... I'm going to give it a try today on my new Koko Loko bush I bought. (might even give it a try on my new Precious Moment Rose.)

Let me know if you want me to explain how to do it, so you can try it too!!! This might be fun! :)

I think it's called layering? I have not tried the way where you scar the cane, and then tie moss around it and keep it damp - that would probably be the only way to do it on trees.

I have tried it on roses - the way where you take a long flexible cane and put it in the dirt (with a brick or something), and then wait a couple of years - they almost always root for me, if I remember to look for them.

Jackie,

That's wonderful! I'm trying the scar method. I'm hoping to see results in a few months. I think it will work, I have done it on 2 canes on each bush and wrapped them with wet sphagnum moss, a damp paper towel, and some saran wrap.

How great would it be to be able to propagate this way? :)

P.s. I hope I don't kill my 'Precious Moment' Rose! It's my first Hybrid Tea. :)

Remember, it's against the law to propagate patented roses.

Okay. Well I can just cut them off then. I wasn't thinking of that, only trying an experiment. Oh well! Maybe if I find a different rose to try it with? I'm taking it both of them are a no-no?

oh, this sounds like inosculation (when it happens naturally, I think) or approach grafting when it is done as a deliberate joining. I have not heard of it being done with roses but there is some really freaky work being done with living trees, especially fast growing ones, to expose the vascular system so the wood can callous over. As it happens, my little peach tree failed in terrible winds on Saturday night, snapping off, leaving only a thin bit of cambium holding it together. Well, I have rammed a broom handle straight through the middle and wrapped the torn trunk with micropore (it is about 3cm diametre). I know this is insanely hopeful but it is now three days later (and today was hot) and the leaves are not drooping!!! Anyway, if wild optimism was not one of the essential tenets of gardening.....Anyway, do have a go, life is so tenacious....or what, the plant police are gonna swoop on you - yes, yes, I have had it explained to me before but criminey, we are gardeners!

On a side note....what happens if your patented rose goes own-root and another plant comes up beside it? Must we seek them out & bash them to death with shovels?

I'm at a loss. I'm not doing it to make money or anything. I can wait until Distant Drums gets larger to experiment with layering... I did do research and patents are only in affect for 20 years. So I should be safe with 'Distant Drums'. But I can not find what year 'Precious Moments' was introduced.

Patent was filed January 10, 1991 for 'Precious Moments' So I'm safe with my experiment on her! Thank you everyone!

'Perfect Moment' Geez, something with these pregnancy hormones are messing with my mind. Lol.

I thought it looked like Perfect Moment! I was going to say something when I saw the pics over there but....doubt crept in. Don't forget to delete the pics posted as "Precious Moments" on HMF and repost them as "Perfect Moment".

Kim was saying that in their climate on the West Coast they call it 'Perfect for a Moment' but where I'm at, it's a great rose with excellent disease resistance, quick repeat, fantastic form & color, and great hardiness. The only thing lacking is fragrance.

LOL! I just did. Man I think I should just sleep all day! The third trimester is really tough! :)

RE: Going to try an experiment...

make the most of the last time you will be able to sleep all day!
So, this is why you are keen on the experimenting then - a bit of hormonal creativity.
Do enjoy your personal propagation, my dear.

Lol! Oh I know! I'm gonna enjoy my sleep. :) And thank you! I hope it all goes well.
