Canadian and Rugosa Rose Blackspot review

FYI; I blogged today a list of my Canadian and Rugosa roses and their degree of blackspot at present (unsprayed). In Canadians, J.P. Connell, Morden Sunrise, and John Franklin are most frequently affected in my Kansas garden; see blog link below.

Here is a link that might be useful: Garden Musings blog on Canadians and Rugosas

Thank you. Very interesting and shows again that zone is not an indication of desease pressure. I am in 6b (MD) and you are in 6a, almost the same zone, but I an much closer to the ocean. The differnce is striking.

Thanks.

While I note your qualification, I'm surprised to hear Baffin is defoliated. Has anyone else seen much disease on it?

'Robusta" here got blackspot in the pattern of "damask crud"--almost the whole leaf covered with large brownish spots.

The Grootendorsts here get lots of some ugly fungus disease that I couldn't identify.

I would be really surprised if it was BS bothering William Baffin. Can't say I've ever seen a specimen of WB inflicted with any BS in more northern climates. It can be somewhat prone to Cercospora leaf spot though in cooler and wetter conditions.

Actually, William Baffin may be a drought problem or maybe made worse by it. Mine at home looks dreadful while the K-State Rose Garden Baffin looks decent.

Olga, I'm interested...in what way do you mean? Is closer to the ocean giving you more humidity and thus more fungal problems on some of these roses? Which ones are worse for you?

RE: Canadian and Rugosa Rose Blackspot review

Yes, I think it is humidity. I didn't try that many explorers, but I do love rugosas.

Morden Blush -defoliates completely from BS
Therese Bugnet - black spots badly
Sir Thomas Lipton - black spots significantly
Moore's Striped Rugosa - completely naked from BS from early June on
Robusta - gets horrible BS and crud
Rugelda -blackspots/defoliates significantly
Topaz Jewel -blackspots/defoliates significantly

I also had bad BS experience with Hansa and Grootendorsts.
Which rugosas stay clean for me?
Rubra
Alba
Roseraie de l'Ha
Polareis
Purple Pavement
Frau Dagmar Hastrup -some BS, but not much
Unknown purple rugosa

Quadra is very clean here.
From the list of Bucks Bucks I tried, Earth Song, Country Dancer and Quitness are the best in terms of surviving and blooming with BS. They get BS and defoliate, but regrow leaves and still bloom. Look quite decent half of the time.

The unhappily-named rugosa 'Foxi Pavement' (Buffalo Gal) does well in a no-spray garden here. It is sharply fragrant and deep purplish pink. Fru Dagmar is good, too.
