Is it just thirsty

I recently planted Austin's 'Golden Celebration' and have heard it's a thirsty rose. I hope that's my problem. It's just begun to leaf out about a week ago and looked great until yesterday it started to droop. I didn't think too much of it but it's worse today. I just gave it a big drink but I wondered, could there be something else wrong? We just had three days of solid rain. It's planted right next to a clematis that suffers from periodic clematis wilt (and just did). Could the disease transfer to a rose? I've never heard of that.

How big was the root system when you planted it. Was there a large proportion of top growth (stems, leaves) vs. the root system? A newly transplanted rose is a vulnerable rose. Did it perk up a couple of hours after you watered it?

The root system has got to be big enough to support the plant, and the root system has to be established enough to function properly.

You may want to shade the plant with something for a few days (A cylinder of chicken wire topped with a piece of shade cloth) . That will reduce the stress of direct sun significantly while the plant settles in.

The plant has been in the ground for almost two months. When planted it was dormant and the canes were only slightly larger than the root system. It's put on quite a bit of new growth in the last week and has a southern exposure so perhaps it's roots haven't kept up and it's suffering in the heat of the day.

It did perk up after I watered so I'll try shading it and give it a drink more often. The other five roses I've planted this spring haven't seemed to need too much extra water so it hasn't been part of my routine.

Water it! It's a big drinker so as soon as you see any wilt give some water...and deeply, not just a little squirt. I use GC and her buddy Graham Thomas as my watering "canaries in the mine". They're always the first ones to show any kind of water stress.

Plant it over your septic tank. That's about what it takes here to keep either happy...Kim

Find yourself something like a cat food can or a tuna fish can. They make good, cheap (free) rain gauges. Get used to keeping track of how much rain you are getting in a week. If you get more than 2", don't water any more and let things dry out for a few days.

Here, it has been extremely wet. We are going to pass 5 inches of rain for June tomorrow.

Quit rubbing it in...we received SEVEN whole inches of rain for the YEAR. Almost half of "normal". Kim

I can't even imagine only seven inches of rain for an entire year...
I think our rainfall averages 40+ inches yearly...
