Is this crown/root gall?

Posted by aptosca CA9 (My Page) on

This rose bush, Fragrant Cloud, hasn't done well. I transferred it from the rose bed up to the raised veggie bed to give it TLC but hasn't helped. Is this gall or just a strange root? The bush is about 26 years old.
Thanks.

I dunno. Crown gall normally has a lumpy texture like cauliflower.

Yeah. As Michael says -- Galls really usually look a lot like cauliflower. This just looks like root that has been stripped of bark on the top.

I don't think it's crown gall either. Actually, it looks similar to what happened to my Jen's Munk rose; roots strangling each other. See the link for pictures:

Here is a link that might be useful: Garden Musings blog on Jen's Munk demise.

professorroush - Thanks for the link and information. Maybe that is what happened. It strangled itself to death.
