I am absolutely IN LOVE with Alchymist. This year, it's 7th in my garden, it is putting on a spectacular show. It is a once bloomer that truly earns it's space in the garden. The funny thing is that it gets virtually no attention at all because of it's location. No extra water, no food, not even mulch. And yet it outperforms many of my pampered roses. I pretty much planted it and forgot about it. It did little it's first few years until last year, when it threw out one tremendous cane packed with multi-colored blooms that have an intense, fruity fragrance. This year, it's three big canes. Next year it might just take over. Alright, here is my Ode to "Alchymist."

Climber, Large-Flowered Climber, Rambler, Shrub. Yellow, orange shading. Strong fragrance. Large, very full (41+ petals), old-fashioned, quartered, rosette bloom form. Once-blooming spring or summer. USDA zone 4b through 9b. Height of 6' to 20' (185 to 610 cm). Width of 6' to 8' (185 to 245 cm). Reimer Kordes (1956).

Beautiful photos. It is interesting that in the PNW, my Alchymist goes more yellow. This rose is a very large climber or you can keep it at a large bush and get more blooms. I have tried both and the bush is very spectacular.

It was my first rose. For me, the fact that it didn't repeat was quite acceptable in the short season of zone 5. It does indeed get better over the years.

I particularly appreciate the way you captured some of the color change. Thank you.

Seil, Justkristy, and IrisGal, thanks for your kind words.

Wirosarian, HelpMeFind lists this rose as hardy to zone 4b, though I'm not sure of that. In my zone, which is zone 6b/7a, there is no winter dieback whatsoever.

Lynnette, I liked your picture of Alchymist. It definitely was more yellow toned than mine. In my yard, Alchymist tends to be more pink with a yellow center. Sometimes it is a buff color. Either way, it is always interesting.

Sand & Sun, thank you for your link to "What is your 1st rose." My first rose was Queen Elizabeth, which was growing in my yard when I bought my house. At my parent's house growing up, I fondly remember New Dawn covering a huge trellis. I didn't appreciate her enough back then. :)
