Henry -- I followed your link to see that they've done it. Wow -- a lot of different products are affected. From a very casual (and very nonscientific) reading, however, I didn't really see why they're taking this action. Or is it there and I'm just missing it?

The "official" reason appears to be that the company "requested it". I am not sure if there is not often some "behind the scenes activity" where the EPA "privately suggests" to the manufacture that a given product be withdrawn.

Maybe someone else with more knowledge of the workings of the EPA can speak to this question.

Note also

- Rootone F Brand Rooting Hormone
and
- Several pyrethrin products for animals (never did think that that was a good idea)

I don't know what reasons were given for withdrawal, but I do know this . . .

Imidicloprid is also the active incredient in Bayer Advantage for Fleas.

We do not use that product, because it is a known trigger for seizures "in susceptible individuals."
Of course, you don't know that your dog or your child is "susceptible" until the first time the stuff triggers a seizure.

Having been down that sad road, we're not going there again.

They are not cancelling imidacloprid, just a particular formulation that perhaps wasn't making as much money as other formulations, for example Merit 75 WP.

Withdrawals can happen for various reasons. For example, cyproconazole (Sentinel) is considered a probable carcinogen. It is also the most effective blackspot fungicide ever, according to anecdotal reports, and is widely used in coffee production and as a wood preservative. EPA decided that those people who both drink coffee and spray roses could increase their lifetime risk. It ordered the producer to withdraw some of the labelled uses. They chose to withdraw it from the home garden market.

"April 5, 2012
The likely culprit in sharp worldwide declines in honeybee colonies since 2006 is imidacloprid, one of the most widely used pesticides, according to a new study from Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH)."

Bees, yes. I read about that, and was sorry to hear it.

Imidacloprid was a low-toxicity product I've counted on for a once-in-spring blast to get rid of sawfly larvae.

But, hey, safeguarding bees is way more important than putting up with some holey leaves for a season.

1. This may change. The EPA is over-stepping its authority in a number of areas.
2. Previous studies have shown imidacloprid to be one of the most innocuous insecticide formulations available, at least from a human perspective.

I know someone personally, on a PhD track in Biology, who has conducted tests on imidacloprid. If it doesn't kill, it seems to enhance reproductive efforts. Personally, I prefer Orthene except for the smell. Merit seems to turn the switch on for spider mite reproduction like no other insecticide I've seen.

So, technically - I wouldn't be that sad to see it go, but it's the principle of the thing of uninvolved/uninformed bureaucrats telling us what's we can use and we can't. Believe me, they are often the last ones who are really in the know. ;-)
