| Bummer! We got so much rain and wind the last couple of days that my Westerland that I had to cut back to the ground in spring, and which was leafing out beautifully now, had a couple of broken canes! They broke at the base too! Sad, they were nice and green new canes. I had to prune at the break right next to the base. I hope it is not too much of a problem to prune those out now, but I had no choice. |

| I've had the same problem this spring. Had to prune the dickens out of everyone, and there's very minimal new growth from the canes I left. Most (about 90%) of the new growth were new canes from the graft, and on the plants exposed to the highest wind velocities I have lost over 70% of each of those new canes. I tried to blame it on critters, but after the 3rd go-around I was able to stand on the deck & watch the damage occur on the last bout of storms. |
