Summer Sale at Roses Unlimited!

reemcook
10 years ago

Roses Unlimited's summer sale has begun! $8 per rose (plus regular shipping and handling charges). The list of roses on sale is posted on their main page.

I ordered roses from RU a few years ago. They were very healthy and huge! Many of them survived an unexpected winter freeze. The ones that beat the inane weather fluctuations are thriving in our garden! :)

Happy shopping at Roses Unlimited!

PS: I would appreciate recommendations from Gardenweb experts on the RU sale roses that would thrive in climate zone 8. I live in Seattle, WA.

Thank you!

    Hi Reemcook: You are in Seatlle, WA - home of the rainy climate, right? My zone is 5a, we have cool and wet spring/fall.

    I don't think RU sale has started yet... the list I see on their website is Pat's favorites, and NOT the ones on sale. I bought from them for the last 2 sales, it said "SUMMER SALE .... ". But I haven't seen those words on their site as of today, Sat. 15.

    One year the sale didn't start until the last week of June ... if the weather is cool, then the sale starts later. I only can tell you what does well when the weather is cool and rainy for my shady garden. Pat's favorites on RU website is a good list: Francis Blaise constantly blooms here in zone 5a, so does Bolero floribunda. Robert Rippetoe's roses are very disease-resistant: Miracle on the Hudson, Callista, Bohemian Rhapsody, etc.

    Take partial shade & wetness well: Austin roses listed on the partial shade's section in their catalog. My Pat Austin, W.S.2000, Queen of Sweden, Scepter'd Isle, Wise Portia, Golden Cel. all take partial shade well.

    Others that do well in partial shade & wetness: hybrid musk such as Excellenz von Schubert, Marie Pavie, Marie Daly, Honey Bouquet, most dark-red and yellow roses take partial shade well.

    Paul Barden has a list of disease-resistant roses in his garden in Oregon, see the link below:

    I'd love to get another but have no room, and if a space becomes available, I should move some bushes tortured by shade into those spots. So I'm not even looking at the R.U. website.

    Thank you, Tammy, for posting up the names on sale.

    From the list: Christopher Marlowe, Tuscan Sun, Apricot Candy, Gene Boerner are DISEASE-resistant .... I saw them very healthy at the rose parks, bloomed at high heat. I have Christopher Marlowe, always healthy here.

    I saw Singing-in-the-rain bloomed lots at high heat. That one is worth buying for a gorgeous display ... but the scent is so-so. Robert Neil's Sophisticated Lady is another disease-resistant one, he's a breeder from hot temp. CA.

    I'm after fragrance so I'll buy stuff like Angel Face, and old garden roses... there are plenty of choices for everyone.

    How are you able to place orders when they do not a accept orders online and it is off hours? I sent an e-mail Friday indicating the varieties I wanted to purchase and asked what the next step in the purchase protocol is, and as of yet I have not received a reply.

    Desertgarden, I tried ordering from e-mail once during regular season and never got a response, so I just made a call. If you don't get a response by end of da Monday I'd give them a call. They are closed wkends, so they may not look at e-mails then as well.
    Step two is they give you a total, and you mail them a check. Its a bit old school, but you will get some very nice plants!

    I kept calling this Monday morning June 17 ... RU phone was always busy, I could not get through. So I checked my email, Pat Henry wrote back to what I asked on Sat.

    I sent her another e-mail asking RU to reserve such and such. Within 2 minutes, Pat Henry answered my e-mail.

    Pat Henry is always prompt in answering e-mails, if people are sure and ready to pay.

    I have yet to receive a response to my Friday e-mail which specified my order and basically requested a total for the charges and info. regarding the next steps. I called a half dozen times on Friday and left a message on their answering machine referencing both the e-mail and my phone number. Hopefully I can place an order soon!

    Pat has responded pronto to all my emails today. But I can tell from the replies they are probably swamped! I'd send another follow up just in case. :)

    Sigh, I don't need anymore roses and this will probably end in divorce, but I can't resist!!!! I'll just hide them from him hehe.

    Hi Strawberryhill,

    Thank you for your invaluable advice on roses that suit climate zone 8a. The link to Mr. Barden's blog with information on disease resistance of roses was very helpful in finalizing my order. Here's my list of roses:

    * Pegasus
    * Darcy Bussell
    * William Baffin
    * Outta The Blue
    * Redoute'
    * Double Pink Knockout Rose (my DH likes 'em!) :D :) :)

    Thank you.

    I received a response.... they are out of the varieties I was looking for :(

    I have 3 bushes that have Mosaic Rose Virus, so decided I would exercise a little patience and try growing the own root roses again. I wonder if I should check again in the fall or just purchase bare root in the winter? I have not been able to find a place to purchase virus indexed??(free) bare root roses.

    I ordered:

    Memoriam
    Strawberry Ice
    Gene Boerner
    Promise

    I have a huge variety in my garden and really adore the light pinks and whites so that's what I went for this time around -- can't wait!

    Pink Gate
    Habanera
    Prairie Flower

    Eyeopener (I've never heard of this one, but the stamens in the pictures on HMF look alot like R. Moyesii...and I can go for a repeating R. Moyesii...just hoping the whole "susestiple to blackspot" info isn't all that true...but I took a chance for $8)

    Are these plants potted? Will they ship anywhere in the country right now? It's pretty darn hot in my neck of the woods right now, and I didnt think places shipped bareroots in the summer.

  • TNY78

    I'm not sure if they have any shipping restrictions in regard to states (I know some companies can't ship to certain states, or won't ship to certain states due to cost), but someone else may be able to answer that.

    The plants they sell are all 1 gallon potted roses. I've never had one that wasn't well established. They're not small bands, but good sized gallons with branching. If you're able to order, its a really good deal, even with shipping which maxes out at $8 per plant (I pay $5 to ship here to Tennessee). Just be aware that they don't accept credit cards, so you'll have to pay by check.

    Hi Reemcook: I'm glad you find Paul Barden's site useful. Burlington Roses in CA carry some roses listed on Paul Barden's BS-survey. Burling sells band-size for $11 each, the shipping is cheaper. She has a big selection 160 minis at $7.50 each, and 389 big roses at $11 each. She has a large selection of thornless roses and rugosa (good for acidic soil).

    I get roses from Burlington early April, and now in June they become gallon-size, if planted in good potting soil and partial shade.

    Roses Unlimited gave me the bill this morning, $70 for 5 roses (includes shipping), great deal! I was relieved that 3 of the roses were not available ... folks ordered it before me. I'm happy ... less to plant.

    The five roses that will be shipped are: Angel Face, Duchess de Rohan, Le Rire Nias, Summer Samba, Lawrence of Arabia.

    Thank you, Reemcook, for posting this thread. Thanks, Tammy, for posting the list on sale ... if not for you, I would not had realized that my pop-up blocker was what prevented me from seeing the RU-sale-list.

    I bought 4, but only 3 were on sale. I had a list ready in case they had a sale, but not one from my list was on sale. Regardless, I bought -
    Iobelle
    Silver Shadows
    Lilac Charm

    Also got 49er, but that was from my want list and not on sale.

    Well, against my better judgement I sent off the money today.

    I ended up with:

    Mardi Gras
    Strawberry Ice
    Cherry Parfait

    When we finally move to the new house, it'll take a week or more to plant everything I've acquired this year! Oh well, so far its been worth it :) I love my roses!

    Appreciated the heads up on the RU sale. Even though I probably should have resisted. I ended up with

    Christopher Marlowe
    Darcey Bussell
    Angel Face
    Easy Does It
    Lagerfeld
    Shreveport

    Wanted Tea Clipper and thought I was going to get it, then she discovered she was out of it. Darcey was the substitute.

    Hi, Barb. This thread's unfortunately from 4 years back - sorry! (Often wander into old threads myself, mistaking them for current ones.) Sale this year was from June 6-14.

    New website for Roses Unlimited is https://rosesunlimitedsc.com/

    Phone 864-682-7673 from 9-3 EST - Email rosesunlmt@aol.com

    Closed Monday & Tuesday this week for the 4th of July holiday, but back on Wednesday. The good news is that they are still shipping on July 10. May be their last shipping date until the weather cools down sometime in September. Use the "Browse" tab at the top right of their homepage for their categories & collections. "About" tab gives info on shipping rates.

    This year's sale thread - http://forums2.gardenweb.com/discussions/4679378/rose-unlimited-having-sale?n=28

    Gail's thread with photos of her roses -http://forums2.gardenweb.com/discussions/4701838/i-picked-up-my-roses-unlimited-sale-roses-yesterday?n=5

    They grow a wide selection of roses very well & are held in high regard by many on this forum, including me. Always a treat to get roses you want on sale, but their regular prices are good, too. My order this year was split 50/50 between regular prices & sales. All arrived in great condition & are putting out new growth. Many budding up or blooming already. Sue
