So I made the mistake of not listening to my gut and listening to my husband. We took out shrubs in front of our house and planted knockout roses two days ago. I knew that I should probably mix with new soil but didn't and now the roses are drooping. I also didn't deep water them because it stormed as I was finishing and has rained for the last couple of days. Is it the lack of "deep watering" or the lack of mixing with better soil? I am knew to this and didn't know if I should dig around the plant and add better soil. And I don't want to over water them. I know I am a mess. Thanks for any help you can give me.

I'm don't know what zone you are in or what your temperatures have been since you've planted the roses. That being said, I'm leaning toward underwatering. I know you said it has been raining but newly planted roses need to be thoroughly soaked after planting. Were they in pots? The root ball may have been on the dry side to start with. I really don't think poor soil conditions (unless there were chemicals in it) would have that quick an impact. If it were me, I would cut off any flowers/buds, soak the plants 2-3 gal. each and see if that perks them up in a couple days. Roses are heavy drinkers!

Water is always nr 1 issue. A common advice is; dig down 4-8 inches (at least as deep as you can easily get), take a handfull of soil and you should easily be able to squeeze out water enough to wet your hand. If you can do that there is enough water. Soil is almost always too dry not to water, and it must really poor down all day to amount to anything. You can never over water newly planted roses, at least if dranage is all right. If you didn't amend with anything at all you could always water with some kind of organic liquid fertilizer, half strength though. The roses will benefit from a bit of extra nutrients (all NPK) to establish. Watering when planting helps roots getting contact with soil and prevents any air pockets, and it is a must. It will help to water now, and step lightly around each plant with your feet to compress soil a bit.

I am in zone 7 and the temperatures did drop a bit but will be going back up in the next couple of days. I watered them well and will wait and see. Thanks for your help.

My experience here in Michigan is that newly planted potted roses simply wouldn't droop or sag, especially after two days of rain, unless the roots got shifted around in the potting soil during planting. This strips the delicate root hairs off the roots and this inhibits water uptake for a few days until new root hairs are grown.

I agree with Mike, I suspect the roots were disturbed when the roses were removed from the pots and they're now undergoing transplant shock. When transplanting a potted plant, the soil cannot be allowed to fall away from the root ball. As stated above, tiny feeder roots will fall away with the soil causing the plant to not be able to take up moisture. Until these feeder roots grow back, your roses will appear to be in a funk. Right now to lessen the stress, remove all the buds and flowers. They'll quickly grow back after the roots get re-established. Before transplanting any more potted plants, e-mail me for instructions that if followed, your plants will not know they've been moved
