| My neighbors 'Sunday Lemonade' Hybrid Tea, has brown petal edges.
It has only happened during this July bloom cycle, and never appeared before in any other years. The bush is covered with roses, and every one of them has a brown edge on their petals which makes them very ugly. This begins in the closed bud. I've seen sunburning in red roses, but Sunday Lemonade is a pink rose, it's sport parent 'Lemon Spice' shows no damage in the same rose bed in the same garden. The brown color extends from the outer edge of the petal and is c. 2/3rds of an inch wide, the brown part appears drier, and dehydrated. Could a sucking insect cause this in the bud? The bush is healthy, and watered often enough.
None of the other pale to light colored roses in his garden have brown edges. Thanks so much

| Hi Lux, thrips can cause petal edges to brown because they suck out the sap. They LOVE lighter colored roses, particularly those with thin, papery, fragrant petals/blooms, which both Lemon Spice and Sunday Lemonade both have. Excessive heat, low humidity, intense direct sun, too much salt in the water (either naturally occurring or added fertilizers) can also do it. You can easily check for thrips by pulling open the petals and looking for small, thin insects between them. Perhaps a hand held magnifying glass or even the macro of your camera might help you see them. You may also consider if any of the other conditions mentioned above might fit the situation. Kim |

| All of the above and I know because I've had all of it this year. I had a terrible outbreak of thrips just before my show in the beginning of the month so all the blooms had those crispy looking petal edges. I finally got rid of the thrips so now, of course, it's broiling outside! So I'm back to crispy petals again...it ain't fair!! |
