I guess it's just me, but I don't like any rose that's potted. More specifically, both ML and OK tend to build up huge canes. I would think that's totally contraindicated for pot growth.

you could always trim back the canes if they get too long no? or does that hurt the plant? lol

If I meant "tall" for the canes, I would've said that. ;-) It's not tall canes that are necessarily the issue in a pot, but hugely thick ones - like maybe the handle of a baseball-bat-thick. That tends to eat up the available space for dirt, roots, and everything else that's competing in a pot. One might ask whether you could pot a small tree. It's done on occasion, but usually in some mighty big pots. Half of a whiskey barrel would be a good start.

i thought that the deeper the the roots go the bigger the thicker the canes will get they cant go too deep in a pot can the canes still get thick?

The answer is Chrysler Imperial, parent to both, and can be grown in a pot as it doesn't get as tall as Mr. Lincoln while it blooms and is more vigorous then Oklahoma. Good cut flower, more disease resistant to B.S. here then MI, and if your original intent is fragrance, it is superb (which was how it was passed on to it's children). Canes are not "too thick" by anyones definition....For your consideration at least. I consider it superior to the other two listed, but that's just my opinion and experience.......Maryl

Different plants have different growth habits. Many HTs (including the two that you mentioned) grow stiffly upright. Pot plants with a relaxed, weeping habit are more attractive than stiff, upright ones. Aesthetically its your choice. I think polys look best in pots.

I only had Oklahoma for one year, so I don't know how it looks mature. But I can't imagine Mr. Lincoln in a pot. It probably wouldn't grow as large in a pot, but my ML puts out 6 foot canes. You'd probably spend most of your time cutting it down and I don't think it would look good. I do have several roses permanently in pots, but they are smaller plants that look good in pots. I have two Glamis Castle and a few others. I don't think HTs were meant for pots.

Hmmm, I have all 3 (Including Chrysler Imperial), and since I've never had a potted rose I'm probably the last person who should be commenting, but I can't imagine any of the three in a pot. They are all huge. Now, Crimson Glory ... I might be able to see that - it's much smaller, fine canes, still great fragrance. For whatever it's worth...

My mother in law grows mr. Lincoln and oklahoma in a pot. Oklahoma has been in a 12 inch terracotta pot for a decade. Its a foot tall. It blooms gine with food. Mr lincoln is in a larger pot and yes, he's really large. I think if you get cold winters you need a big pot- but if you prune them back after winter they'll be kept reasonably short. If you get little winter die back and let them go in a big pot they'll be really big. But if you have the room- and must do pots....the more the merrier |
