Don't hear much about this Austin rose. Anybody grow it? I'm especially interested in the vase life.

I just bought Sir John this year. The flowers are relatively small, have little fragrance but are pretty numerous. We chose it because of the color, size (it is in a pot) and its vigor. We have other better roses for cutting and have not yet tried it in a vase. Mike, sorry for the non-answer. When we get the next flush from some new canes it is producing I'll cut some and let you know. The flowers brown on the edges relatively quickly after opening but there are so many you can finger prune them and the bush still looks great. Based on the way the flowers age on the bush, my guess is, they will not last long in a vase but I could be wrong. It is very clean and disease free here in coastal southern calif.

We also bought a Jubilee Celebration this year and the vase life and fragrance of this rose is really fantastic. I would highly recommend this rose for that purpose.

Thanks, Lee. I'm thinking I have a place for just one more Austin rose and I have until next Spring to make a decision.

Even though Sir John has matured some we still don't view it as a rose for producing cut flowers. Stems are short, flowers have no scent and form in clusters not really conducive to cutting. On the other hand Jubilee Celebration has been an absolute perfect rose for cutting and the fragrance is better than anything else in my garden, Sharifa Asma, Golden Celebration Double Delight and Mr. Lincoln. In the vase it's perfume fills the kitchen.

Follow up on Sir john ----

We have been able to harvest some of the flowers for the vase. They are very long lasting and have a slight but pleasant fragrance. The stems are short so the vase used must not be very deep. A nice flower and the color holds well.
