Found my first JB on a clematis. I washed out his dirty little mouth with soapy water. He died a slow death. Looks like they are definitely here at least a few weeks early - we usual get them around the 4th of July. Didn't see any yet on the roses. They' ll be on them soon enough. At least the soapy water works well for small infestations.

I plucked about fifty off my roses today, I wasn't pleased. They made it easy for me as they were all eating the roses and not the leaves. argh.

I'm in a Chicago suburb. Been battling them for over a week.

Found my first one on a rugosa leaf at sunset. Squished him dead. So far, so good. Maybe the milky spore and last year's dryness have done some good.

Saw my first one Saturday. I don't usually see a lot but I still hate them!

RE: Ugh

I've been heavily infested for about a week now. I went out earlier with the Soapy Pail of Death and de-bugged the major JB lollipops. Disgusting, vile work. They are so thick even the fat, lovely bumblebees are repelled and have no where to land on what's left of the tattered roses.

I'm sending out constant patrols and considering training guard dogs to aid in repelling the invaders!

RE: Ugh

Yesterday evening I took my dogs for a walk and on our way back inside the house, we brushed past one of the roses. Well, there must have been a JB on one of my dogs because after I brought my dogs inside the house and left them for a few minutes to get some water, I came back to their room and noticed that there was a decapitated beetle on the floor in the dog's room. I'm thinking that one of my puppies - I have 2 toy male poodles - probably tore the head off the JB! LOL. Too funny. Love my pups, hate the JBs.

RE: Ugh

Sorry, but could someone please tell me what a "JB" is? A kind of beetle? On Roses? Maybe not something to be concerned about where I am...all I have are those stupid spit bugs and aphids.

RE: Ugh

They are Japanese Beetles. Mostly an problem East of the Mississippi; unsure if they have appeared in Canada. They look like a metallic-green version of our 'June Bugs'.

RE: Ugh

They're here early as well. Been here 1-2 weeks and usually don't start until July 4th or so. Still under control at the moment, usually a few dozen to pick off and kill in the evenings. I hope they aren't too bad this year.

As I pick them off every day I wish I could get the birds interested in eating them--nothing seems to find them tasty, while they find everything they see tasty!
