I played Rose Roulette. Dug out 9 dead roses, 2 live ones that I tossed, Vavoom (it was an ugly plant AND color!) and one I called CamelNOT, never knew what it was, and 5 live ones that went into pots. They were very small and struggling to survive in the beds. Then I planted two out of pots into the ground and moved 3 others to better places in the ground. LOTS of digging! Al helped a lot with that part but I did do all the planting and some of the digging out of the dead ones. He doesn't let me dig out the live ones because he doesn't like how I do it, lol. It's nice not to see those dead carcasses in the beds any more. I hope all the moved ones will thrive now!

Parti, I just didn't care for that flat orange color at all. The plant never grew very well and was spindly and ugly too. I'm usually really loath to toss a living plant but this one just had to go. The other one was one of the MANY Camelots I've purchased over the years that were NOT Camelot. It was some ugly, gangly red rose. I used those spots to plant some things I actually like! Lol, mori, sorry, no plans to head west.

My Lady of Megginch & Princess Alex of Kent were struggling in the ground last year so I dug them up & put them in pots. Initially they didn't do much except survive, but this spring......OMG, they burst into bloom. LOM went from one sickly cane to 4 canes with about 15 buds. What an improvement. PAOK (which I had been sorely disappointed with) also looks very healthy with a nice rounded shrub shape. Seil, I wish you best of luck with your invalids & hope they bounce back.

It is very satisfying finally removing those 'carcasses' from the yard. My Peace and Lasting Embrace bodies are now gone. I will be transplanting something else in there at some point. BTW, I just found out that the county project on my yard will be in 4-6 weeks. I happened to be home when the guys just showed up in my yard so I asked them. Otherwise I doubt they would have notified me. So I have to dig up the rest of the roses (I did a lot this winter because I thought the the project was happening in the spring). Seil, just keep the potted roses where they get some afternoon shade and make sure they are watered. I've only lost one, and that was one I got at a plant swap, so it may have been dying when I got it.

Thanks for the support! So far I haven't seen any severe wilting. That's a good sign!

Workie, workie, workie. I have a few more in my garden that are dying or flat out dead that I need to get rid of today myself. Looks like a good day for it.

I got rid of Vavoom a few years ago too. Just didn't like it. Gardens are too small to keep roses we don't love. Carol |
