I was at Raft Island Roses today and they had a City of Welland Rose..and it had lots of those weird small thorns. It came from Palantine as there was a tag. SO??? Gosh I have not heard of that rose but it is beautiful.

RE: What is the disease that causes excessive small thorns

Excessive small thorns by themselves are not a sign of any disease. If that was the case, all rugosas would be diseased. Excessive small thorns along with strange new growth, witches broom, and rubbery stems can indicate rose rosette disease but herbicide drift can have similar symptoms. Some roses just have lots of small thorns.
