New growth on my roses coming in black?

I've recently moved to Texas from up north, andmy roses are not surviving the summer as well as I am! My Mirandy and Knockouts are potted in containers, they lost all their leaves and new growth is black and ies off quickly. The stems are turning brown from the pruned tips and spreading south quickly. I use green light rose defense on them once per week and water them early in th morning...what is killing my roses?

I would guess its the combination of oil spray and extreme heat. Generally oil is best reserved for days in the 70s and 80s. You won't have much fungus disease in very hot weather anyway. Part shade is probably desirable for roses in the Texas summer, especially if potted. Dark containers make it worse.

That's pretty weird about the new growth turning black like that. I wouldn't have thought our heat (I think you're close to me) would have been enough to cause that. Unless you've got them placed directly on concrete or situated where they're getting a lot of reflected heat.

I have had oil sprays burn canes and foliage at temperatures of no more than 75 deg., so I never use them in the summer months. In the heat TX has been getting, and in containers, they are very subject to damage. I hope the containers are large, and you are watering often. Jeri

If the numbers written where zone should be are a zip code, then they're minutes away from me. Honestly we've had a very mild summer so far. We've just barely hit the mid 90s in the past few days after weeks of continuous rain. I've only had to water my pots twice after not for most (if not all!) of July. Disease is definitely trying to get a foodhold around here with it being cloudy and (almost) raining again every afternoon.

That does it. I'm shipping my backyard to Houston. The freight costs will be lower than my water bill, so why not?

Lol. We DO get around 50 inches or so of rain in a normal year.

Oh, pooh, don't tell us about it. I get 12 inches per year. You should see our water bill. I am sick, sick, sick of watering! Diane

We get between 30 and 50 inches a year, but only in the winter months. I am sick of watering, too ! Re: cane die back and heat ... I agree with Michael completely. It's not only the oil and heat that is stressing your roses, but quality of light is different from what your roses experienced up north. I found that when I moved to a new climate, my roses had a much harder time adjusting than I did. Smiles, Lyn

I agree with Brittie. This summer has not been an especially hot summer for us in this part of Texas. I have many roses in full all-day sun, including roses in containers and I have never experienced black new growth. Last summer's drought was absolutely terrible, but even then, I didn't experience that kind of problem in my roses. My guess is that it is the spraying which is either incorrectly applied or incorrectly timed. Molly |
