Help please pest is eating leaves and rose buds

I recently bought a home with beautiful knock out rose bushes. Recently they quit blooming and I noticed dead leaf clumps moving. On closer inspection, it looks like some sort of caterpillar or worm (brownish green) wraps itself in the dead leaves and then moves on to eat the healthy leaves. What in the world is this pest and, how do I get rid of it???

I am new to gardening, and very new to roses. I feel so lucky to have such beautiful rose bushes, but they are quickly dying. Please help.

I have attached a pic of the 'leaf clump' that hold the insect.

Thank you greatly for any advice and/or help. Jen

Those are bagworms. Unusual for them to attach themselves to roses, but not unheard of. Usually they are most common on Junipers or Arborvitaes. In my area (Tulsa) they can start gathering their bags in late April or May. They start out very small, and as they eat and gather leaves they grow much larger. My evergreen Arborvitae is prone to them so every few days when it's time for them to show up in late spring I start checking the foliage to see if the small ones are starting up. B.T. will kill the small ones, not so much the larger ones. I've supplied a link to an Oklahoma Master Gardener site about them...Hope this helps...Maryl
