My Veterans' Honor rose did not do well last year. This will be it's 3rd year and a few weeks ago two of the three canes died. I am now left with one cane and three leaves. It just finished blooming and had 4 beautiful blooms on that one cane. I just noticed tonight that it looks like that one cane is trying to shoot some more growth out of the bud eye. Does anyone have any advice on what I can do to save this rose? I really don't want to lose it, the blooms are absolutely beautiful and last very long as a cut flower.

It looks like the bud union is right at the surface of the soil--not deep enough for an HT in zone 6--should be a few inches below. I'd suggest adding a couple inches of soil to cover it better, and then adding mulch on top of that to control the weeds. It is too late now, but I wouldn't have pruned the rose that hard. Instead, I would have just snapped off the spent flowers. I'd suggest not removing any more leaves this season--it needs every leaf it has. I would snap off any buds once the new growth has gotten to be a foot or two feet long--to force the plant to grow more leaves instead of flowers. With digiligent disbudding and some luck, I think you may get new canes by the end of next Spring.

It appears that at least one of the canes that were cut off had healthy green tissue at the base, what were the symptoms of the canes you cut off? The remaining cane seems to be healthy and breaking a bud to send out new growth. I would try so somehow support that last cane as the new shoot will put a lot of stress on it with nothing growing on the other side of the plant to counterbalance it. With time, it should send up new shoots from the bud union. A couple last questions, do you fertilize it? Do you protect it over the winter?

The canes that were cut off appeared to have some type of cane borers. They had holes in them and the canes were turning yellow, they were also very small and spindly. I did fertilize it around the end of April with some Vigoro rose food. I also water deeply once a week. I did have some mulch mounded over the canes last winter. I just went out and looked and it is breaking a bud up near the top. So just maybe with some TLC it may make it. Thanks to all for your advice :)
