Are first blooms of young bushes small?

My new Easy Does It finally had one of the 3 new buds open. The flower is smaller than the pics I've seen of EDI online, and doesn't have the frilly petal edges. Is this because it's a young plant? I was worried that some adjacent bushes were shading it too much so it wouldn't get its 6 hours minimum sun, but if it's flowering, is that proof that it is? It has also grown many new leaves since I planted it about 3 weeks ago.

Yes, younger and smaller plants can have smaller blooms. Poor nourishment and drought can have the same effect, and can also reduce petal count in some varieties. I don't water my established roses, and there are noticeable differences between years where it's hot and doesn't rain, and years where temperatures are mild and the roses get a good balance of moisture and sun. In the latter case blooms are strikingly larger and fuller.
None of which means you can't have the wrong rose. You just have to keep observing it to try and determine whether it's the correct variety or not.

The rose was planted in new topsoil in which I had mixed Rosetone, so it's not undernourished. Also, it's rained several times per week here for weeks, so it's not under drought.

Heat also contributes to smaller blooms (and they blow quickly in hot weather).

Just let it bloom and grow during it's first year in the garden. You should see larger blooms in the fall. Next year is when you'll see some decent blooms. Your bush needs to grow a good root system to produce the flowers you want to see.

yes and less petals, no fragrance, poor or off color. Just like a healthy 6 year old kid can't hit a baseball as far as a healthy 20 year old. Got to grow up to get strong.

So, it's a small flower and lacks the scalloped edges of the truly developed EDI flowers. I love it anyway! Since I planted the rose, it has grown many new leaves and put on 3 buds, the first of which is the one under discussion. I can't wait to see it as a really developed plant. The colors are spectacular.
