Easy Does It looks like drilled thru leaves, flower

Perfectly round holes through leaves and the newest emerged flower. I am furious at whatever did this! What can I do to prevent further damage?

Some things can't be controlled, so it's best to try not to get angry about every blemish.

I don't know about leaves, but if there are multiple small holes in flower petals, some needle-nosed insect drilled the bud before it opened. It could be a shield bug (stink bug) or a rose curculio, a small weevil-ish bug colored bright red or orange. Search "rose curculio" for tips. These insects are hard to control, as they are mobile and don't eat exposed leaf tissue that might be poisoned. I wouldn't want to blast the whole garden with insecticide in hopes of hitting the (maybe) 1 or 2 bugs doing damage.

Re: the flowers, depending on how it looks (side shewed open on bud or small holes straight in, welcome to caterpillars or curculios respectively; takes Bt or insecticide to control, although if it's only a few flowers, most just live with it. The leaves; probably leaf-cutter bees.

Furious is walking out to find one of your roses sitting on its side with no roots. That's furious!

Ester.......

Michael is correct in that there is no need to pull out the heavy guns right now, if the insect causing the damage is the rose curculio. According my gardening notes, curculios only stay above ground for about 8 weeks and the end of June is near the end of their above ground cycle. That's a rough estimate because it depends on when then first surfaced.

Right now, they are migrating into your garden, but are not breeding in your garden, so you will not see a whole lot of damage.

I stopped disbudding about a week ago, the roses are full of buds and I have only found three damaged buds and two curculios this week.

You can find photos of both the damage and the insect in the HMF GLOSSARY under "rose curculio".

I am adding a link to a post I made on GW that explains how I finally managed to accomplish my goal of keeping them from breeding in the garden without the use of poisons.

Please note, my garden ended up having a serious infestation and it was either cure the infestation or stop growing roses. It took several years of battling the bugs before it got that bad.

Smiles,
Lyn
