My experience is rust on hollyhocks, snaps, zinnias and their like does not translate to roses. The same conditions which encourage the annuals to rust can encourage susceptible roses to follow suit, but just because the annuals rust does NOT mean the roses WILL rust. They appear to be separate fungi and pretty host specific.

It's like the bacteria which causes Pierce's Disease in grapes and the same family but different type of bacteria which causes Oleander Leaf Scorch in oleanders. "Same" bacteria, but host specific. Both are spread by the same insect, the Glassy Winged Sharpshooter, but one bacteria won't affect the other plant.

Kim is correct. Generally, rose diseases do not cross-infect other species nor vice versa.

Personal experience: the massive amount of annual rust on large patches of a perniciously persistent Potentilla ground-cover has so far never translated to the roses growing near it here: Darlow's Enigma, Grandmother's Hat, Jacques Cartier, Secret Garden Musk Climber, etc. Same for hollyhock rust.
