Oh, I sooooooo need to do this!!!! I've been compiling a list of the ones I want to ditch and who is going from the patio pots into the ground. It's just been too hot to actually do it though.

Ditching:
Snowfire
American Pride
Frankly Scarlet
Black Cherry
and a bunch of minis that haven't gotten higher than six inches and won't bloom.

Seil, I finally broke down and shovel pruned Snowfire earlier this spring, and I couldn't be happier! She's been replaced with Souv de Brod who is doing wonderful!

Good for you!

I'm thinking I want to get rid of Sunsprite, I know it's the first year but it's on the second flush of blooms and they are so boring and open way too quickly. Totally not what I was expecting :(

RE: Some got the shovel today!

I have done this before but I always feel guilty after...anyone else??

LOL Maude...It's like saying "I'm sorry, I think your just not pretty enough for me". LMAO

RE: Some got the shovel today!

No guilt.

By the time I give up on a rose, I'm usually heartily sick of its nonsense, and ready for a fresh start.

nummykitchen - don't know about Sunsprite in your climate, but ... I was really disappointed in my Sunsprite year 1. Blooms blew in a day, hardly any fragrance. This year she is a STAR. Blooms stay on for 4-5 days, fragrance is wonderful. 1 year is a little early to decide on a rose if you think it has any potential at all...

RE: Some got the shovel today!

Thanks, Harmony! That gives me some hope! I will definitely give Sunsprite one more year, at the very least :)

Gave away Brother Cadfael this summer. Didn't like the bloom form. My preacher buddy and his wife enjoy it. They will be getting Tradescant in a couple of weeks. Not to wild about the bush and the blooms are ugly until fully open. And they're small. As with any plant or flower, give it a try to see if it's your cup of tea :)

I shovel pruned Sunsprite last year for the exact same reasons. It must grow well somewhere though because I still read rave reviews of it now and then.

Gene Boerner has not been granted a stay of execution--she goes this week. She contributes nothing to the garden!

Not only did some get the shovel but Marvelle and Julia got a big haircut. I am going to give them all some fish fertilizer..and I guess that's it for the year!

RE: Some got the shovel today!

I have a new alternate to shovel pruning. I am in the middle of gopher wars, and since I can't dig up and cage them anywhere fast enough, I am "prioritizing". I saw Tantalizing Red with a gopher hole next to her. And I just left her. A week later I pulled her out without roots. She "had" been on my list.

O, neat, harmonyp, if a little risky. I have, with huge pleasure, ripped out a hideous and naked Peace rose (this is not really a great rose in the UK) and a stiffly nasty Swan Lake....from a customer's garden. My customer's often tend towards the anal retentive, given that they rarely have to actually contend with these roses, they are frequently reluctant to part with them. I solve this by completely ignoring them (the roses) until they (the customers) cannot fail to respond to the diseased horrors in ther gardens. A Queen Elizabeth ('can we train it over this arch?' NOOO) is next on the list.

A week later I pulled her out without roots.

Wow, that made it easy, didn't it? :)

On the other hand, instead of shoveling Abe Darby like I should have, I got out the fungicide yesterday and sprayed all the newly emerged, still-pristine foliage with Banner Maxx. I just can't give up those gorgeous flowers. I'd miss them too much.

Two people removing Snowfire. I've had that bush for over 30 years. It never looks too bad or really good either, and I don't care for the flowers (they look fake-ish), but it's front and center in the garden and takes a beating with heat and sun all day plus traffic of a busy street, so she survives and I let her be.

I yanked out an unknown bush this week, just got sick of hoping it would get better. The neighbor had given me an Iceberg, my first Iceberg!

campanula - Queen Elizabeth was one of my first roses. Newbie me was reading about it - one of the easiest, most fail-safe, bloom everywhere and anywhere, must-haves for new rose enthusiasts. Oye. It's been a dog (perhaps bad analogy - I love dogs...). It's off the beaten path, so I just leave her there...

What a deliciously bloodcurdling thread.

I chopped Pat Austin up with grim relish a couple of months ago. I really don't miss her.

I gave away Comte de Chambord - lovely blooms. Great Scent. But what I want are more or less constant spots of colour and he didn't fit the bill. It's my fault. This is my first rose year and I bought a bunch of roses without knowing who they really were.

I also got rid of English Sachet. I'm giving away Look Good Feel Better and Regensberg (boring stiff). Catharina Zeimet is hanging in the balance.

Socks - Iceberg is wonderful. Mine are well into their 3rd round of blooming this summer. Each time the number of blooms is twice that of the previous round. Now that summer is at its most fierce the blooms are slightly smaller than in spring, but they don't fry or disintegrate. I'm really enjoying this rose, and so will you I believe.

RE: Some got the shovel today!

Once I make a decision, I do my best to not look back. I have SP most of my yard so that I could grow roses better suited for my area. I have not sprayed for years, and do not want roses that require spray.

I also do not want to maintain arbors, so I now have a garden that I can manage. It is lovely although nobody but my family can see it since once again it is terribly hot.
