unhappy with Traviata

Am I doing something wrong. Usual BS spraying and fertilizing. Should I cut it off very short and start pruning more heavily. Right now it is about 4'tall and looks like a bunch of dead blooms. Oh it bloomed, but wondering if I just prune deadheads off much deeper, if it will make me happy. I have two of them in different locations and they are both the same behavior. Someone once said 'pile of sticks'.

It's not clear to me what you are unhappy about. Defoliation? Growth habit?

I agree with Michael, what is the specific problem you have with them? If it's simply the growth habit then you need to find a different rose. All roses have different growth habits. I've never cared for Hot Cocoa because it likes to send out branches in all kinds of odd, angular directions. It's always a gawky looking thing.

Mine got very very tall so I would take off 3' or more with every deadheading, but like the other posters, I wonder what problem are you trying to solve.

Oh no....I just bought one today for half price. It is in excellent health both lots of buds, so I could not resist. I will be checking back to see what exactly the problem is with this rose. I just love red roses! Lesley

The problem is Blackspot...when no other roses in my 1/4 acre has much of a problem at all. I use the Bayer advanced disease control. I really don't like the form, I guess. Will try to cut down about 3' off, and see if it makes me happy. Goodbye if not! I might like it if I had a window that I was worried about someone accessing it. I think it would deter anyone from trying to get in. Anyway I am not a happy girl! Thanks for the help. Will try one more time.

RE: unhappy with Traviata

Traviata is susceptible to cercospora spot disease but is considered above average in blackspot resistance--though it does get some blackspot in my garden if not sprayed. However, the Bayer tebuconazole product should control both diseases. I don't know how to explain defoliation unless (a) you skipped spraying for a month or (b) blackspot in you garden is developing resistance to tebuconazole. I haven't heard of the latter happening.

I agree Traviata does better with industrial-strength deadheading, stems 2-3' long

A few years ago, I had 2 or 3 Traviata and eventually got rid of them. The thorns were awful!

RE: unhappy with Traviata

There are two rose varieties named Traviata. One is dark red (said to be highly disease-resistant) and the other has petals with a white base blushing to red edges. A Pink Traviata is also in commerce.

Which one do you have?

I have the dk. red. You hit the cersospora right on the head there michaelg. I sprayed once more with Bayer advanced disease control. Looks better in that aspect..but still going to prune it back the 3'. Thanks so much everyone.

RE: unhappy with Traviata

I agree that Traviata has a close, upright habit; air does not circulate that well in the plant. Also, it's a bit coarse, though a good colour. That said, I forgive it everything (even having no scent) as it flowers like crazy even in high temps. I have it at the end of the garden, among other plants as I don't feel it's glamorous enough for pride of place. But it is useful and tough, which are virtues not to be sneezed at!
