Hi guys, I have a yellow rose called sunblest and it is growing a lot of really small canes that can't even support the blooms it has been putting 5 buds to the cane generally I have been pinching off some of the blooms but it still just falls over when the bloom opens??? What can or should I do the get larger canes on this plant??

Canes will get stronger as the plant matures. Meanwhile you could remove more of the flower buds. You could also support the stems with a temporary cage, or prune them back to where they stand up. However, I wouldn't remove a lot of stem and foliage from a young plant. Leaves are needed to capture sunlight and manufacture energy for growth.

On new small plants it's not unusually for the canes to be thin and too weak to hold up a bloom. Give them a few years to mature and they will do better. In the mean time besides thinning out some of the buds you can stake the canes temporarily while they're blooming to help them hold them upright.

With new roses, I grit my teeth & try to absolutely leave them alone--re. pruning--until they are ~3 yrs. old. Yeah, cut off dead or unhealthy growth, but restrain from pruning for more blooms or shaping.

Fertilize, water, mulch. Start in good soil & well dug hole.
I like to add a handful of triple phosphate at the bottom of the hole--it moves very slowly through the soil & needs to be at the roots.

In my experience living in the hot humid south, most roses look like gangly 'teenagers' for those first couple of years, then bloom out great on the third year after planting. hope this helps.
