| Hello friends,
I SO appreciate all of the informational/thoughtful responses I received earlier this week when I noticed the leaves on my rosebush were "looking like crap." I was advised to look for little green worms (rose slugs/sawfly larvae)and in spite of extensive searching, I could find none. This morning, in the damp, warm air, I believe I have finally spotted the culprits...and they don't look like slugs. Do you see them?? They look like beetles; there are two pictured. As I'm sure you can predict I am wondering 1) what they are and, naturally, 2) what to do about em. I had my two year old use a big stick to physically knock the ones we could see to the ground, but of course I'm sure there's a more efficient/effective solution. I love this forum, and long for the days when I can be the one dispensing advice. For now though...thanks again. :) |

| Japanese beetles. Hold a bowl of soapy water underneath and disturb them; they will take a dive. This is peak season. They will go away later. |

| It's possible to have both pests at the same time. Your other photo truly did look like rose slug damage. The telltale sign of rose slugs is like that picture Jeri posted in the other thread; transparent white or grey blotches on the tops of the leaves from the slugs feeding on the underside of them. Japanese Beetles, on the other hand, do the damage shown in your picture--at the bottom, just to the right of the light green leaves, you'll see a set of 4 leaves that look like lacework doilies--that's evidence of a JB munchathon. If you search for recent posts here on either "JB" or Japanese Beetles you'll see a plethora of info. |

| Those bugs are definitely Japanese beetles but the holes in the leaves do look like rose slug damage as well. |
