How to best send a rose bush to my mother, from my garden?

Last year I grew two rose bushes from cutting's of my Grandma's old rose bush she grew back in Nebraska. My Aunt, who now takes care of the rose at her house, after my Grandma passed away many years ago, had FEDEX'd me the clipping and I was able to get two nice rose bushes from them in my garden.

I want to send one of these mid sized rose bushes to my Mom in Lincoln California, since this was her mother's rose back in Nebraska, when she was younger. Thought she deserved to have one and would be special to her.

I live in Westchester New York. I am wondering if I should remove the rose bush from the ground now and place it in a pot and then FEDEX it to her around November...or even take it on the airplane with me. What would you all suggest at the best method to send her the rose bush...and when?

Thanks very much. - Steve

Here is a picture of the rose, in the event someone can identify it for me. I believe it's a Floribunda, but not positive. I call it Grandma Sawyer...after my Grandma.

Thanks, Steve.

Steve, you'll probably get differing opinions, but I wouldn't ship ANYTHING in this hot weather. Most commercial shippers stop during this season & this year is particularly hot most places.

I'd personally wait until cool fall temps--or even winter dormancy. Water it very well & cut back (& root some more plants of that gorgeous rose). Then dig up, rinse soil off, pack roots in damp newspaper or sawdust then plastic bag the thing & ship priority or 2nd day. Ship on a Monday & make sure someone will be there to receive it at arrival time. I don't know what the rules might be for carrying plants via airplane, but these are basic recommendations for successful shipping.

I wouldn't dig it up & pot now--too hot. If you wish to pot it first, I'd still wait for much cooler temps. Good luck & how nice to have such an heirloom. Wish I had some of my Mom's & Grandmother's roses.

Bluegirl,

Thanks a lot for the great advice, I think I'll do as you advise, it makes a lot of sense. Appreciate the nice words too!

Take care,

Steve

Steve - I agree. Don't ship until fall.

But why not root some cuttings for her? Then you can ship in the spring or next fall or carry them out yourself.

I'm going to see Mom in August. I'm taking some cuttings I've rooted a couple years ago.

Good luck to you! Pretty rose too.

Rosesinny, I was thinking of taking some rose cuttings and giving her one of those, but the rabbits in her yard ate the last small own root rose I sent her. I thought if I sent my Mom a more developed rose bush the rabbits couldn't hurt it too bad. Fall is definetey the smart time to send it. Thanks for the input and ideas.

Enjoy your Sunday,

Steve

Steve, I'm concerned because your mom lives in California. Taking plants/agricultural products into CA is risky (they tend to get confiscated). Does anyone know whether agricultural inspectors check packages sent through USPS or UPS?

Cecily, yeah, you bring up a good concern. I'll need to check with FEDEX maybe and see if that could occur. Thanks for your conern and feedback. Take care, Steve.

In your zone you are going to have true winter dormancy. Let the plant get very, very, dormant courtesy of winter weather, bare-root it, and take it with you when you visit her, or ship it to her.

What agricultural inspectors are most worried about is bad bugs hiding in the soil, e.g. JB grubs, not the plant itself. Get rid of all the soil, but wait until the plant is dormant.

She can plant it right away, and it will start growing again. Should be fine.

Hoovb, I hadn't thought about waiting for the rose to go into dormency. That is a great idea, thanks a lot!Appreciate the advice. -Steve
