looking for a rose to sit behind Eyes for you, underneath a rampant Graham Thomas so wanting a deep purple. It is hard to find Carruth roses in the UK but I can get either of these - or I can get another Cowlishaw rose (breeder of Rhapsody in Blue and Purple Skyliner amongst others). I really don't want a rose which has too much tendency to fade into pinky/reds as the clash with GT would be horrendous but must fill the yawning gap (currently occupied by misbehaving phlox). I need a rose which will grow to around 1m tall and would much prefer a single or semi-double if possible.

I have Kim's polyantha Lauren, and it has achieved at least 36 inches in 12 months, and it is about 2 1/2 ft wide. Of course, it blooms in clusters of small flowers, but it has never stopped blooming. In my climate it is completely healthy, and VERY fragrant. The color is almost exactly that of Veilchenblau - lavender/purple. Mine does not fade to pink. Jackie

Suzy, I have both Ebb Tide and Night Owl. We have extreme summers and winters here; in summer, both are magenta. In spring and fall they are a lovely purple, but mine have never displayed that deep, rich color that some folks have managed to photograph. Night Owl will stay 1 meter tall only if you wrap the climbing canes around pillar. Very robust growth on mine, so far, but it does bloom only at the tips (of 5-foot canes) unless they are tied down laterally. Nice scent though, and a real bee magnet with its single blooms. I love its white center with yellow stamens, too--would really complement Eyes For You. Ebb Tide grows like Hot Cocoa for me. It has also shut down completely in our heat wave (over 90F for the better part of 2 months). I like it though, for its unusual shape and scent when compared to everything I have around it. I think Ebb Tide would fit your height requirement better. Both have been very healthy for me as far as blackspot & mildew and would look even more fabulous if I had their neighbors spaced a little farther away.

oh cheers, Flaurabunda (great name by the way). I sort of suspected that Night Owl might get a bit tall when I really need a clumpier, lumpier sort of growth. Jackie, it is getting easier to get hold of Kim's creations through Bierkreek - A poly would go well, I think, as it is in the middle of a raised bed with a romping Rozanne and a rather good Jacob's Ladder, Lambrooke Mauve. The polemonium is sterile so, unlike most, blooms continually throughout the summer. Although I love the blue phlox, it tends to mildew and flop over the hulthemia - it's either the allotment or the compost heap. Then, of course, I have a prime place for a new rose. I very much like Tom Carruth's roses - he has bred some outstanding plants. Home Run has been a favourite for a long time and of course, Ebb Tide was a real breakthrough in purple roses. I am crazy for Cinco de Mayo, not forgetting the astonishing Hot Chocolate. I am certainly keen to add a couple more now that Weeks is defunct. I tend to follow hybridisers much as I collect certain authors. When you pick up a new book by a favoured writer, you know you are in safe hands, I feel the same about rose breeders, especially when they have developed a 'signature'.

| I'm a big fan of Tom Carruth, as well, and have a number of his roses. My three Ebb Tide roses all fade during our hot summers, but over time they do get somewhat better about this as they mature. I just got Ebb Tide's offspring, Twilight Zone this season, and so far it seems to fade less, though it has the deep purple color. It has a nicer growth habit than ET and fewer petals, which seems to be a plus for you. Because its supposedly a grandiflora, it may grow taller than you would like, but mine is too young to tell. | campanula - from a pure color standpoint, I sure would recommend Twilight Zone. Starts very dark burgundy (for about a day), then goes into and stays a deep beautiful purple. Not sure about end size - mine was planted as bareroot in Feb, and right now it's about 2'x2' and a complete trooper in direct sun/dry california heat. Could get big, or not... Not the single or semi double you'd like, but I'd sure recommend it highly. |
