| Welcome! I'm sorry for your deer issues. They can be REAL pains! Your rose is going to flower at the ends of the canes. Canes permitted to grow straight up, are going to flower only at their ends. I presume the rose has finished flowering for the season? If it has (hopefully fairly recently), it's time to prune it. The longer you wait after it flowers, the greater the chances of pruning off next years flowering wood, eliminating it from flowering next year. You're going to want to twist some of the canes which grow up the pillars/posts, around them. You have to interrupt the sap flow up the cane to stimulate new laterals to grow from them. Those laterals are what will flower next year and later. The top of the arbor can also be pruned, shortened, and any overly long canes tied down to as close to vertical as possible without kinking or breaking the canes. Training as much wood as possible, as horizontally as possible, will encourage it to produce the maximum number of flowers it is capable of. Winding or twisting canes around the uprights will do similarly so you can finally have some flowers going up as well as across the top. I hope it makes sense. Kim |
