As long as you're sure what's left isn't root stock, don't let them flower. Pinch off the flower buds; keep them properly watered and make sure they are getting enough to eat, whether organic or inorganic fertilizer is your choice. The plants can either grow or flower. Not permitting them to flower will force them to use the energy to produce more wood and leaves, which is what you want now. Kim

RE: sickly and dying rose bushes

I've had the same experience with deer and now have my roses caged to protect them. The previous owner of my house had planted five roses in a narrow bed out in front of my home.

The deer had free access to deer candy for years as the previous owners were in their 90s when I bought the house and the roses survived.

Altho' they looked like weak plants when I finally caged them, I followed Kim's advice above and by the next season they had doubled in size and out grew their cages.

This spring, I widened the bed and reconditioned the soil and put up much larger cages around the plants. They have already doubled in size from last year. These are budded roses, HTs and floribundas probably from the early 70s and are putting out new basals and looking like new roses.

I left one rose I do NOT like uncaged and the deer are still eating it, but the dang thing keeps coming back.

Smiles,
Lyn

Lyn, isn't that always the way. If it was your pampered darling, it would fall dead at your feet.

Woollady, my fall-back cure-all is alfalfa, either meal or pellets. Make sure it doesn't have salt added. You can buy a bag at most farm supply stores. I have a garden scoop I fill up and scatter it around the the plants not too near canes. It can cause canes to rot if too close.

Good luck.

I would follow Kim's advice. Roses are very very stubborn, and now that you have a deer fence, once they get some TLC they will recover!
