J&P's new catalog

Got the new catalog with their new 2013 line-up. I see that two of the 2010 test roses are being sold now as SOFT WHISPER and CLOUDS OF GLORY. But... they're selling a bunch of Frank Benardella's minifloras as hybrid teas! Here's the list: POWERHOUSE, LIBERTY BELL, DEJA BLUE, DOUBLE TAKE, AMBIENCE and FLAWLESS. How can they get away with that? I mean I know some of my minifloras put out bigger blooms than some of my floribundas, but these roses are registered as minifloras, NOT hybrid teas.

This is not your grandmother's Jackson & Perkins.

Or, even your older brother's or sister's. The only "penalty" for selling them as an "incorrect" class is your not buying them. But then, the class which has traditionally out sold all others in these catalogs is the "High bred Tea", so they probably figure they stand a better chance of dumping the plants they picked up for the catalog by calling these geese, chicken. I'm sure there will be plenty of people who will pony up their money, then flood the forums asking "what's wrong with my rose? They aren't HTs!" Get ready..Kim

Beware of ANY rose business in its death throes, as J&P obviously is. One has to wonder how long they'll attempt to cash in on their once stellar reputation.

I think I've jumped on every rose vendor "going out of business sale" that's taken place in the last decade or so. Without exception, I've regretted doing so -- regardless of how reputable the business was in its glory days. Hope springs eternal, so it's a lesson I'll probably never learn.

It's not like I was buying Hybrid Teas anyhow, but I still think it's terribly sad.

Since I have not driven up there, I can still pretend that if I turned onto Donlon Road from Hwy 118, it would all still be going on there, at the place in Somis. I know it isn't, but in my mind's eye, those greenhouses are still full of seedlings, and the little fields are full of young roses, just as it used to be.

Yep, it's very sad. But, on a lighter note, I have their new rose SOFT WHISPER blooming now and it's quite lovely.

Yikes...$19.95 & $17.95 for minifloras? Our local rose society had 'Ambiance' & 'Denver's Dream', plus lots of others for $6.50 during our Spring fundraiser.

So many nurserys in that area. But many are hard to tell if they are open or closed.
