Has anyone ever done a study on how long individual flowers/buds last on the bush or how long it takes individual buds to open? (I realize that this is like asking which of your children are smarter or prettier.) For example, in my vast length of time growing roses (1 MONTH!) I have noticed that Brandy takes longer to open and stays on the bush longer than Gemini.

Every cultivar is different, and even the same cultivar will vary with the weather conditions.

Generally speaking, however, a more heavily-petalled rose will usually open more slowly than one with a lower petal-count.

Andrea.......

I have an idea. Why don't you check into volunteering at the San Jose Heritage Rose Garden ? They need volunteers and you would be able to see thousands of roses and work with people who love roses and love to teach about roses.

Their volunteers range from those who are new to roses to experienced rosarians.

The more different roses you handle, the more you learn about them. Here's a link to their website:

Another website that is full of information is HelpMeFind. You can do searches on individual roses and read the MEMBER COMMENTS about their experience with the rose, or read the EZINE articles or go through the Q & A archives. The rose REFERENCES on each rose page pull together information from rose books from all over the world.

I've put the link for that site below.

Have fun !

RB1,

A great idea and one that I already rejected. I work all week and the garden is 85 miles and 1 1/2 hours away if I volunteered on the weekend. A little too much time in the car for a bad hip. But thanks for thinking about it. If there was a public garden maybe 30 minutes away it would work. I will do a little research closer to my home.

Thanks again,

Andrea
