Please please help...rose novice

Hi friends,

A few weeks ago I pruned my rosebushes back pretty significantly. I've been living in terrified fear ever since (thinking I'd ruined them). Sure enough though, leaves started sprouting, and this morning, I noticed the first rosebud!!! I am beyond excited!

However, the leaves totally look like crap. Little holes, etc. Pic provided. I'm gonna post another pic that offers an alternative view of the leaves. Could somebody PLEASE help me figure out whats going on? I have absolutely fallen in love with gardening, and especially roses.

Hi, I'd start spraying for bugs if you want perfect leaves. I use the Bayer insect/disease control- good results.

Looks like rose slugs/sawfly larva. Little green caterpillar things on the underside of leaves. You can just squish them by hand. They don't do any real damage. Please read previous postings on the pros and cons of spraying, especially for insects. Many sprays hurt good bugs, including bees.

Cat'sRose has it right. These guys are transient, so the problem is self-eliminating.

But the damage IS annoying -- so if you want to stop them in their tracks, just squish them with your gloved hands (or bare fingers, for that matter).

This isn't a pest worth the collateral damage you'll do by spraying with pesticides.
