or do we all just try to eke out a bloom here and there? Is there any point?
It is such a gorgeous thing, and I keep trying--and am curious who has success.

My RR is healthy and happy in my garden, she's about 4 ft tall and 3 ft wide when I pruned her back a couple of weeks ago. She's a terrific rose in my garden.

I only water my whole garden once a week, sometimes I will water in the middle of the week when it's extremely hot. I fertlize it with Rose Tone in the early Spring, July and will probably do it one more time in late August. I regularly apply Messenger mixed with Bayer Disease control once a month.

One of my better cut flowers in summer. Mine was from Wayside and was called Caruso at the time. It is of course grafted.

We have 2...own-root. The older of the two hasn't been a big bloomer, though I kind of thought it was because it wasn't getting enough sun. Plus, our season overall this year has been awful-cold, rainy, cloudy....not much is blooming very well to date. I'm hoping they BOTH will become better bloomers once we get more sun/heat. I may move the original to the back yard where it will get full sun. Those blooms are exquisite though, when they do come.

I don't grow it, but I noted its name during a walk through the Portland International garden a couple of years ago. I wouldn't have written it down if it weren't pretty darned floriferous -- I'm not one to consider a plant that has gorgeous flowers you have to beg for (which defines Perfect Moment, at least for me -- I inherited the plant).

Now, I didn't revisit every two weeks to see if it kept pumping out blossoms, but it sure had a lot when I was there.

Yes, yes, Portland, OR.

I grow RR here in Tropical Minnesota. It really doesn't belong in a zone 4a garden, but with a sheltered location and extra winter protection it has done OK for several years until now.

The plant itself is a bit fussy. It wants lots of fertilizer, but not too much nitrogen or it will grow weak, tall canes. I give it a local equivalent of Rose Tone , Alfalfa, and Millorganite supplemented once or twice a year with Shultz's Bloommaster(a lower nitrogen analog of Miraclegrow) .

It is not recovering well from last winters damage that was particularly severe. If it continues to fail, I will replace it with Velvet Fragrance which has similar flowers and a plant that is less fussy.

Regards,

Charles

Here is Rouge Royale, badly in need of deadheading and shaping, but I really do grow it :-). I keep it because the blooms are so wonderful. The disease resistance is not wonderful in my garden.

I used to grow it... shovel pruned it due to blooms with proliferations and very ugly foliage... I did like the diameter of the blooms though... larger than most Austins...

RE: Does anybody really grow rouge Royale?

I think your mileage may vary by location.

I got it oh, maybe 3-4 years ago when it was the rage here. In coastal z10 SoCal, it is a mildew magnet and I lost patience. I took it up to our z8a SoCal mountain place which is much drier and I have very little mildew problems at all. It still mildews. It will be going soon when my Vintage sale order babies are done incubating in their gal pots.

Honestly, I like Traviata better. I know, it too, is not for everyone, but I love the true red and flower form factor. It's leaves are spotless in the mildew capital of Calif. I appreciate that resistance more than I can say, so I honestly don't care that it doesn't smell. I don't see the big deal about that anyway. So, you just plant others that do smell and plant them next to or put them in a vase with, right?

That said, there are probably a bunch on the Vintage or other website with similar form factor that would do you much better, if it's not performing well for you do it in.

My feelings are hurt on behalf of my beloved Rouge Royale!! (kidding a little.) My best one is about seven feet tall, covered with blooms nearly all year, and scoffs at blackspot. Of course, the blooms fry by noon in our loathsome summers, but the other half of the year it is heavenly right outside our bedroom. Clearly it likes heat and plenty of water, or maybe it's plenty of heat and sufficient water. Anyway I've got three more growing up (slowly) from bands. My absolute favorite rose in the world.

Laura,

So glad that it's doing well for somebody! I just got one during RU's sale, and reading these posts was getting me down.

Carol, your photo looks wonderful! If it ever cools off, I'll have to find a nice place to plant this one.

RE: Does anybody really grow rouge Royale?

Mine is 3 years old. Got a few blooms in the 2nd year. But was knocked off right to the bud union this past ugly winter. Not worth keeping in my garden - just not hardy enough. But I admit I will miss the gorgeous blooms if I shovel prune it. So, there it stands, sulking. Final decision next summer - either it starts earning it's keeps, or it goes.

RE: Does anybody really grow rouge Royale?

I grow it here in zone 4 where I am not supposed to be able to. Granted, it is no monster bush, but this IS zone 4 where we are realistic and are just happy to get blooms before winter comes again...LOL.
Mine does as well as any hybrid tea in zone 4. There is dieback but no worse than any other, to about 6-8 inches. Mine is an ownroot which rebounds nicely and gives me about a dozen or so gorgeous, intensely fragrant, deep pure red blooms with no fading or burning. (Yes, I am happy with a dozen blooms because summer is short here!) The form on this rose is like no other. The tops are flat
and the swirling petals remind of my beloved old gallicas.
The disease-resistance is average for a hybrid tea here, meaning it will get some blackspot if not sprayed. But its no worse than the others and when the leaves are healthy, up until the end of July here, they are very large and glossy. I couldn't give this rose up for the fragrance alone. I planted it next to the steps up to my deck (with Pope John Paul II) so I can sniff it whenever I want. The scent and the beauty of this rose is memorable.
Too bad it doesn't do well for everyone.

Carole: Waaah! Picture me stamping my feet! I want one, too! I'm going to buy three next year and try again.

RE: Does anybody really grow rouge Royale?

Kristi in Atlanta was the first true Rouge Royale enabler on GW. She posted picture after picture. IIRC she had bought plants already growing in pots at the local good nursery and then potted them up.
Her's were magnificent (CarolFM's are a close second.) This in the hot and humid southeast.)

Ann: It was one of Kristi's pictures that finally pushed me over the edge. Remember the one with her Hand? I showed that one to all my nursery friends. Do you know if she's still around? I think she had health problems.

RE: Does anybody really grow rouge Royale?

I'm sorry to say that it is one of the few roses that I actually hate. Here it puts on an incredible amount of growth. All the growth is gigantic thick ugly canes. The blooms were few and far between and I couldn't stand the texture of them(like cabbage) I was happy to see it go. As you can see we all have different gardens and different tastes.

 o
RE: Does anybody really grow rouge Royale?

Mendocino,
Are you sure you didn't get a Traviata mislabeled? Traviata has thick thorn ridden canes that could be used as weapons and the blooms hold water long after the held water has rotted the blooms. I could see using shredded Traviatas as cabbage additives, since they last for weeks.

Ann (who mourns that her three RRs hated the soil they were in .)

RE: Does anybody really grow rouge Royale?

I have 9 of this horrible joke of a rose! Last year they gave me 1 and I mean ONE!!! nice almost perfect flower as those Celeste posted and they do smell nice, but nothing to rave about:

Photobucket

This is the 3. season - The bareroot plants are just sitting there - wait I actually think they have one bud right now!!! The ownroots are also just sitting there - putting out nothing but those glossy lettuce looking leaves ... all blind shoots here a group of 3:

Photobucket

I cut the blind shoots a bit back and they are now putting out new reddish shoots so if I am lucky I will get a flower or 3 this fall. 2 nice blooms from 9 plants in 3 seasons? You have got to be kidding me ... I have never in my life seen a rose perform this bad! But I will wait another year - and hope they will finally get going - but I really, really doubt that all 9 together will ever put out as many blooms as the one plant Carol got. I have seen corpses in my former work as a doctor look more alive and perky than this plant!

RE: Does anybody really grow rouge Royale?

ROUGE ROYALE is what I call a DIVA rose. Absolutely aggravating at times but when she is happy she produces the finest red (and I do mean R-E-D: not crimson, not vermilion, but true shimmering ruby red) cut flowers that have ever existed. A healthy plant (we'll get to that in a few moments) gives forth flowers the size of a grown man's outstretched hand. As mentioned previously the quartered flower form is sheer utter perfection. Never is there a petal out of placement. Petal texture is velvety on the top and shiny satin on the reverse. Speaking of petals they are stiff-Stiff-STIFF with substance and flowers last a looooooooooong time in a vase. Stems are strong and long, holding the huge flowers stiffly upright. Fragrance is powerful. If you can't smell this rose at forty paces then either you have the wrong plant or there is something defective with your olfactory sense.

Now for the ugly.

1. Disease resistance sucks. The shiny burgundy turned dark glossy green foliage looks resistant but isn't. She'll need spraying CONSISTENTLY with a fungicide to control black spot in warm, humid climates.
2. Hardiness sucks. I've lost this rose to winter kill in zone 6b! Apparently Miss Thang likes it hot.
3. The flowers are glorious in a vase but retched if left on the bush. She fades and burns at the blink of an eye. She also doesn't like it if water pools in her buds, which causes warping. Given how deeply cupped her buds are this is a persistent problem.
4. Repeat, while reliable, ain't nothing to rave about. After her spring flush she dutifully doles out her flowers at a fairly even pace. Trust me, waiting even a little bit is agony once you experience one of her astonishing blossoms.

ROUGE ROYALE is my favorite red rose but I'd be just plain evil if I didn't point out her flaws. She makes me work hard for those ruby red, sumptuous roses.

RE: Does anybody really grow rouge Royale?

No Ann I have Traviata. I find it a bit aggravating too but to me it's better than Rouge Royal.

 o
RE: Does anybody really grow rouge Royale?

Mendocino,
In agreement, which is why I have three Traviatas and no RRs anymore. But I do wish that RR had made good cane growth just once.

 o
RE: Does anybody really grow rouge Royale?

Can someone tell me where I can purchase this rose? It has not been found in my local nurseries, but then again, my local nurseries only like knockouts.

Thank you! :)

There are several mail order nurseries listed for it on Help Me Find Roses.

To name a few:
Roses Unlimited
Northland Rosarium
Edmund's Roses
