 o
catmint to deter Japanese Beetles

Growing catmint and was on net trying to see when I should trim it back. Gardener there claims it will deter aphids and japanese beetles. We don't have them here so haven't worried about them. Anyway it is a pretty plant and says it works as a repellant. Worth a try maybe. I feel so sorry for you all! Good Luck!

In this, my 3rd summer in JB territory, upstate NY, I have yet to see serious JB damage on my roses. I think the reason is that birds eat them.

JBs don't care about catmint in my garden. They don't eat it, but it also does repel them.

They sneer at my catmint too as they fly over it in search of roses. Roses with catmint (Walker's Low nepeta) planted around them have the same number of JBs as roses with other perennial under plantings.

FWIW, I ground up a bunch of Artemisia (wormwood-extremely bitter) in a blender, strained off the liquid, topped it off with water & filled a handsprayer with it.

It worked well to stop eating on leaves & fruits of every plant I tried it on, including some young herb plants that had been scalped (tho. I'm not sure whether JBs were the only culprits)
