Roses that stay small or turn out smaller due to cooler zone, etc

It is the time of year where I evaluate the spots for next year's planting. I'm looking for roses that stay smaller or maybe won't get as big in my zone? Skinny roses?

I'm interested in the ones that didn't get bushy or didn't fill up the way you thought or didn't get close to the size stated in the description. Any kind of rose (except minis) works.

Is height a concern? Or just width? I have several HTs that are narrow growers but then they tend to get quite tall instead. You might check into some of the polyanthas. Some of them stay smaller. I have Blanche Neige (White Koster)that is very compact.

Be careful what you wish for. I have had lots of roses get stunted and eventually die in zone 5a. Some of the smaller Buck roses would be good. Many of the Generosa roses don't get very big (Martine Guillot gets huge!). There are even some smaller Austins.

Do you care for the Drift roses? Bloom in abundant clusters, very low maintenance. They stay below 36 inches in N. Texas and will get a little wider. What about some of the polyanthas? or are you more interested in a "tea" rose?

RE: Roses that stay small or turn out smaller due to cooler zone,

Even in my warmer climate two roses stand out for maintaining smaller size, as advertized, with full size blooms, and are hardy to zone 5, I believe: Bernstein-Rose from Tantau, a yellow that looks a lot like Julia Child, but stays smaller, and Sisters Fairy Tale from Kordes, a light pink. They aren't the easiest to find, however. Palatine did have Sisters. B-R was available from Heirloom, and I ordered my three from Hortico. The few Tantau roses I have, I really like. Diane
