2013 Roses in Review Survey

It is time for the annual Roses in Review (RIR), the American Rose Society's annual survey of roses. Results from the "Garden" evaluations are used to compile the ratings in the American Rose Society (ARS) publication Handbook for Selecting Roses. Participation in the RIR process is open to EVERYONE! Membership in the ARS or a local rose society is not required.

The link to the on-line entry form is below. To register to use the site, click on "New User" on your first visit. The ARS will not use the information to SPAM you as the info is used to allow reporters to enter data over a period of time (register once, use the same info to come back and enter more info later), and to assist the RIR coordinators with data tabulation. This information is deleted after the end of the survey period. You do not have to complete your entries at one time, you may come back and add more ratings at a later date. Just be sure to use the same information (e-mail and name) the next time you want to enter. Also, remember to hit the "Save" button after entering data. If you participated last year, you will have to register as a "New User" again this year.

The 2013 RIR survey form is also available in the July/August issue of American Rose (the magazine for members of the ARS).

On-line and paper forms must be submitted on or before September 26, 2013, to be included in this year's results.

A reminder to all Consulting Rosarians and Rose Show Horticulture and Arrangement Judges that you are encouraged to submit a RIR survey. There is a check box available if you do not grow any of the listed varieties. You vote will count with your district's standings as "participated" if you check this box.

A personal "Thank You" to the members of the Penn-Jersey District who participated last year!

Remember, the RIR survey process is open to everyone! Please pass along the link and ask your rose-growing friends to participate! Feel free to e-mail me with questions. Thank you!

Yeah, I got my magazine last week and saw it in there. Gotta go do that. Thanks for the reminder!

Nothing on the "special review". Finished up everything else. All done :)

Oh, heck! I made two mistakes but there doesn't seem to be anyway to edit or change my input. I sent a message to their "technical assistance" address -- because that was the only email address I could find--but that doesn't seem like the right place to tell them I accidentally entered incorrect information.

That's great--there were only 3 roses I could comment on, and I managed to goof up two of them! Think I need my morning coffee!

Kate, send me an email with the email address that you used to register. I'll ask if there is a way to delete or modify the response.

I registered and ran through the various categories. I only grow two of the roses listed, and both of them are too new to me to review. Oh well ... I tried.

diane, thanks for your offer. I'm happy to report that after I notified the "technical assistance" address (the only email address I could find on the page) that I had goofed, I quite promptly received an email in reply from someone named marily who nicely said not to worry--she would enter in the corrections I had indicated.

So I guess that is what anyone should do if they make a mistake. Click on the "technical assistance" and email them what the mistake was. They evidently forward the email on to the appropriate person.

But thanks again, diane, for being willing to help.

Kate, Marily is who I would have contacted, so I'm glad that it worked out!

Diane - I am just ignorant, so if I should know the answer to this question I apologize. Question: Does the ARS have any plans to collect REGIONAL Roses in Review type data? Those of us who live in, for example, a Mediterranean climate in California would like to know which roses do well here, period, as we do not garden all over the country.

We know that some roses which are disease prone here (rust, for example) are clean elsewhere, and visa versa - no black spot here, and covered with it elsewhere. Also, of course we do not care whether roses are "cold hardy", as we have very few nights of frost at all. A rose could very well be a 10 here, and a 3 on the East Coast, so I really do not see any worth in trying to rate roses all over simultaneously - the data is really not of much use. Just my opinion.

Jackie, the lowest level of collection is done at the district level. Each coordinator has the data provided by reporters in for their district, and they are encouraged to provide a summary report. The coordinator names are on the RIR form in the magazine. I can also help with contact info if needed, I just have to find my copy... :-)

Oh, and I am the coordinator for the Penn-Jersey district. Send me an email for a copy of the 2012 report.
