| Someone posted a question about propagating roses and I wanted to ask a slightly different question without hijacking the thread. Do they ever clone roses through something I believe is called "mericloning" (not sure about the spelling). I remember reading about this during my orchid days and it involved using the growing tissue in a type of laboratory process.
Anyway, just wondering:) Maude |

| It sounds very much like the tissue culture sometimes used, Maude. (Good to see you, BTW!) Kim |

| No, Maude, mericloning is not used in the production of roses. Mericloning is comparable to in vitro fertilazation in the animal kingdom, and is a relatively expensive, time-consuming process. As you indicate, mericloning has been used for years in the reproduction of orchids. Unlike orchids, roses are fairly easy to replicate thru budding, grafting and the rooting of cuttings. None of those reproductive techniques is successful with orchids. If vendors suddenly had to resort to mericloning, rose nurseries would be closing at a faster pace than they already are. |
