Replacing an Arbor With Roses Already in Place

I have altissimo roses growing up the posts of an arbor--the roses are about 8 or 9 years old. The arbor has to be replaced and I'm nervous about what to do with the rose canes when it's taken down to make way for the new arbor (which will have the same shape). The new arbor will probably be ready to go in by mid-August or (I hope) sooner. Anyone have advice on what to do with the roses--do I prune them? Do I try to find something to tie them to temporarily? Any other ideas? Thanks!

We have done this on several occasions, and it's never been a problem.

If your roses have been in place for 8-9 years, and you are in a mild-climate zone, they should probably be self-supporting. (On more than one occasion, our roses have been holding up the arbor.)

Just break the arbor apart more or less in place, and pull it out from under. If the plants are not perfectly self-supporting, stick a post in the ground, and loosely tie the plants to that, for temporary support.

You shouldn't have any problem at all.

Thank you, Jeri. The canes are pretty strong/stiff. I will do my best to relax about this.

DO relax.
It's just not a big deal. Really.

I've removed and replaced trellises from behind climbers before too and it wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. My climber didn't stand up on it's own so I just put a lawn chair in front of it and let it drape on that until we had the new trellis in place. It worked fine and I had no cane loss on the climber at all.
