I just looked on Regan's website and they've added a bunch of new roses for 2013, including DARK NIGHT aka EDDY MITCHELL, aka GARDEN DIRECTOR BARTJE MILLER!! I got one from Edmund's last yr, but it died, and they couldn't replace it this season because they didn't offer it. Then I bid on one on Ebay and the idiot who listed it ripped a bunch of us off for all sorts of roses, so I didn't get it again. Anyway, now I finally can get it. As soon as they are ready to take orders, I'm ordering it!!!! I'm sooo excited. That was the ONLY rose I really wanted this yr.

I'm happy for you. I've known Bartje for many years and bought a plant several months ago in her honor. It's still in a pot, and it blooms quite a bit. The flowers are not too large so far, but I find the color combination strikingly pretty. The foliage is nice and glossy. It may need blackspot protection in some places, but it's okay in my west coast climate.

I've been having issues with my 1st year plant, but I think it hates its current spot in the garden. I had planted it where it would get some shade so that the striking colors wouldn't get all muddy or gross, and I don't think it's getting enough sun. It has been spindly and sick all year. But wow.....when it blooms...it's PURTY! And yes, the blooms are the same size as most of my minifloras.

Mine's overshaded by a couple of big Buck shrubs and it's pretty happy. It gets afternoon sun, and the shade from its' neighbors help shade the blooms so they don't crisp. It's been a healthy plant for me. I agree, the blooms are striking but it does need some shade so it doesn't fry.

OMG, you guys won't believe it, but the one I ordered from Ebay way back in February just now arrived! I was in shock. It's not in great shape, but it's definitely alive, and appears to be own root. I can't wait to see if it really is what it is!! LOL I'm still going to order one from Regan's tho, unless this one pumps it out fast before season's end. Oh I noticed on the Regan's website, they mention it being own root.

I got 2 from Edmunds when I was able. Planted both plants about 20" apart where they get mid afternoon shade. 1st summer they grew and bloomed OK but this year they went crazy. 5' tall, covered in good foliage with tons of beautiful blooms. The blooms aren't big but in the spring and fall they get some good size to them. If you order this beauty, order 2 and plant fairly close together for a great effect. It blends fairly well with oranges or whites.

This is a rose that is best planted in a pot that can be moved to the shade when about to bloom, or else where the blooms are cut rather tight and allowed to open inside in a vase. All other situations for mine (and I have rather cool, damp weather mostly) have had the blooms burning before they get to their best stage. Funny about the one showing up today, beth. Maybe we have a lurker here . . . ??
