Gopher Baskets - make your own or purchase?

Curious about those of you who wire around your roses to protect them from gophers.

I found some old steel chicken wire mesh (3/4") on the property, and have dug up and built baskets for my first 3 roses which I was clearly on the verge of losing. I plan over time, to do as many as I physically can - just taking my time.

If you make them yourself, what material do you use, and how big do you make them? The cages seemed pricey, but are they worth it?

I bought a hundred foot roll of chicken wire at True Value Hardware (they ordered it for me) and make my own. I measured how large the baskets had to be for the various sized pots I have to plant and created a roll dispenser for it with a length of pipe and stacks of concrete blocks awaiting a construction project. When I need one, I count out the number of holes (squares, hexagons, whatever you want to call them), cut it off with old clippers then make the size I want from it. So far, they've all seemed to work. That way, I can also cut off lengths to wrap around plants above ground to keep the rabbits away from new basal growths. It's a whale of a lot more cost effective and prevents having to run out to buy new baskets when needed as well as having to store them until used. LOTS easier and cheaper! Kim

Love the idea for the wire roller!

I have just been using up the bits of old wire we have, and boy did we have a lot!
