| Hello
I just recently changed out all of my roses to "iceburg roses as they seem to be more resistant to disease...My question it. Does any one have any recommendations on carign for Icrburg Roses..I spent a lot of money recently and i want to be sure to care of them properly. I would appreciate your feedback. |

| You don't list where you are, but I did a bit of digging in your web site and if you're here in California as the address there indicates, you're right. Iceberg is one of the finest roses (or any other kind of flowering shrub) you can plant here. They can flower twelve months of the year and require even less of everything many HTs do. Presuming your drainage is appropriate, just keep them watered. They respond quite well to monthly feeding of whatever fertilizer you prefer, but mostly don't require it. Ideally, you've had them planted so they can get as large as they want. Most are happiest at the five or so foot range, though many want to be larger. I've linked to an article I wrote a few years ago for Help Me Find Roses which explains a lot you might find interesting. Also, ideally, you won't let anyone hack them to the nubs as that they do NOT like. Much of the time, you can simply snap off the spent flowers and leave them alone to do their thing. I've planted and maintained many hundreds of them here in the Los Angeles area for many years and find they are happiest when they are never pruned by more than about a third, and that only once a year. They will tolerate more, but they won't be as healthy nor as continuously full of flowers. Most of the time in many of our climates here, they don't require spraying. Leaving them to get as large as they want to be helps keep them properly fed by their large leaf mass and helps prevent any potential black spot issues. They are pretty much guaranteed to have light mildew on the flower peduncles. Ignore it as it is genetic and honestly not worth fighting. I hope it helps! Kim |
