Now, you have to understand I've been growing roses since the early 1970's. All but the last 4 yrs were in central and south FL. This spring I decided to order a Rugosa just to see what they are like. Got a small own root plant in early spring and planted it out by the shop, away from the other roses so no spray would get on it. It started to grow and put out beautiful foliage. Really didn't expect any blooms this year with it being so young. WRONG!!! I happened to notice today it has a spray of 7 blooms ready to bloom. I'm ready to see what they look like against that beautiful foliage. If I like what I see, I'll order R.R.Alba next spring. It's been a while since I've been excited to see a rose bloom :)

Congrats Ken. Not just on the Rugosa but on the fact that after all these years you're still like a kid at Christmas time with a new rose. Outside of the thorns, I like Rugosas and if you can grow them where you are now how great for you. Is this one fragrant?.......Maryl

Good for you, Ken! I hope your Rugosa is highly fragrant as the scent of a fragrant Rugosas is sublime! Have fun, buddy!!! :~) Deb

mmmm, a whole new class of roses to explore ....and what great roses some of them are! For whites, there are the amazing Polareis and the classic Blanc Double de Coubert Pale pinks (which look terrific against that fresh foliage - Sarah Van Fleet and (my favourite single, Frau Dagmar Hartopp, then Roseraie d'Haye (which some people consider the most beautiful fragrance of all), even yellows (Agnes) What joy, what fun, have a great sniffing time.

Haha -- and now I can get you hooked on something else. The seeds from Rugosa hips are really easy to get to sprout. Just put the hips -- the whole darn thing -- in a pot and leave it there (mine is next to the compost pile) and in a year or so you will see a bunch of sprouts. It is easy to tell the rugosas from the others by the foliage.
