what smaller roses lend well to a trellis/obelisk?

In the coming year I have plans to move several sickly roses out of an overcrowded bed to a spot where they have no competition. I'd like to replace them with just a single rose that could be trained for a trellis or obelisk. But I don't want anything that will get overly large (like the climbers planted by my predecessor, which I had to prune out of the eaves of my house). I'm currently considering Jeanne Lajoie, Colette, Charlatan, John Davis, Lavender Lace. Anyone who's tried growing these varieties, I'd love some input please.

I have a friend who has Jeanne Lajoie and it will cover the entire side of her garage in a season...in zone 6, but OMG it's gorgeous in bloom!

I am in SoCal, my Colette is staying rather small, a 5g planted last fall

I think 'Colette' would be great. There's a pale yellow sport, 'Lunar Mist', if you are looking for that color.

I have 'Heritage' and 'Aloha' (1949) as small climbers (8' wide). Both repeat better than 'Colette' or 'John Davis' did. 'Aloha' is good for cutting. Both are fragrant and can be somewhat disease resistant, depending on what strains of blackspot you have. It is not very hot here, but 'Aloha' is considered OK for the South. Don't know about 'Heritage'.

My late brown-thumbed MIL bought a house with Jeanne LaJoie growing up one side of an arch in really bad soil.

With no care, no water in drought, and general neglect, the rose survived and continued to bloom for eight years. It was established when she bought the house, but it impressed the heck out of me.

Jeanne la Joie a nice little mini climber. Marginal appeal from a distance.

My Jeanne LaJoie takes over my whole arbor (4x8) but gorgeous each spring. Sporadic rebloom later but doesn't get as much sun as it does first of spring. That pic of it on trellis is gorgeous.

Off topic, but according to the trusted experts on this forum, the iron trellis has encouraged a spider bite infestation that almost killed it! Forgot my water prophylaxis this year.

This is where the new rose will be going, now that the nandina infestation and about 100 asiatic lilies have been removed (hopefully we got them all).

seil/annt: I think that may rule out the Jeanne Lajoie; keeping it tamed to a reasonable size looks like it'll require more time and energy than I have right now.

hoovb: The outer ring of that bed is Iris germanica 'New Dawn' so I'd like something that's not the same color. Lunar Mist is pretty though... Might recommend it to my mother, who collects yellow roses.

michaelg: I may take another look at the Aloha, since the color is similar to the Colette; I like repeat bloomers, and I'll need a focal point once the iris fade at the end of their season.

Thanks to everyone that commented.
