photo of first bouquet. vase life?

Ok, so I took this photo with my Blackberry. I'm working on locating my nice camera and getting it charged.
Anyway, I got this cute little trophy irridescent vase on ebay and filled it with the following from my garden:
Mr. Lincoln (which appears hot pink)
Julia Child, Tiffany, some white Kmart floribunda and some white unidentified OGR.
It's nice on my bedside table. I can't seem to get roses to last in a vase. I add sugar to lukewarm water, cut stems underwater, put in fridge for a couple of hours.
Any suggestions?
Thanks. Susan

If you have calcium tablets (calcium citrate disolve faster than calcium carbonate), chop them into dust with a scissor into the water. Calcium firm up the petals and make them last longer.

I've noticed that for me what makes the biggest difference is the air temperature. On cool days the roses last much longer while on hot days they can wilt in one day.

You might be waiting too late to cut them. You may want to try taking them when the blooms are a little tighter, as the sepals have just dropped and the outer row of petals unfurled. In exhibiting, we call it 1/2 - 2/3 open. Once you can see stamens on the hybrid teas, they are pretty well open, and usually won't last much longer once cut.

Thanks for the suggestions! I am definitely waiting too late. Seems I should let them "bloom" in the vase.

Add a drop of bleach to the water to make it last longer, especially if adding sugar which feeds bacteria.
