Hello. I saw a mention of the "Rose Bible" in a post. Anyone have any favorite books on roses? How-tos, Garden Design, History of breeding? etc.
I've gone round the bend now with roses. I picked up a little book at a used bookstore titled "A Rose By Any Other Name" and it explains how certain roses got their names and a bit of ancestry/history.

The Ortho book on roses is a good general discussion for the new gardener. "Rose Bible" I find okay, beautiful photos, author focuses on performance in his climate a bit much without I think mentioning how poor the same varieties might be in more challenging climates.

Off the top of my head, "Landscaping With Roses" (Cox), "Designing With Roses" (Lord), "A Year Of Roses" (Scaniello[sp?]), even "Roses For Dummies" all pretty good. The Graham Thomas books for history.

My favorite book for getting sense of the time line of the development of roses and the breeders which influenced the development of roses was written by Jack Harkness, The Makers of Heavenly Roses. His book, Roses talks more about the various species roses and their hybrids. Although, I truly like his book, Growing Roses, I think it's important to remember that he grew roses in England and the time period of the roses that were available to him when he wrote the book in 1967.

Roses have continued to develop and some of his cultural advice is somewhat dated if you are planting modern roses.

The Harkness books were the first non-picture books I read about roses and really helped me see roses in a different light.

Smiles,
Lyn

Don't forget Thomas Christopher's book "In Search of Lost Roses". But watch out, it's addicting!

Roses by Jack Harkness is the best book I've ever read on roses. I've also reread the library's copy of Stephen Scanniello's Year of Roses so many times I finally bought myself a copy. Quest-Ritson's Encyclopedia of Roses is not only good eye candy, but very useful. I also like anything Peter Schneider has ever written.

Enough already,

Steve

Vintage Gardens web site (www.vitagegardens.com) also offers a great deal of concise info on roses, including a short history of all the classes, tips on pruning, hardiness guides and care. Another website you should know about is helpmefind: http://www.helpmefind.com/rose/roses.php

Thanks! I've joined the ARS and the Nashville RS. I am looking forward to learning more about roses. I've become obsessed. I will definitely see what my library has to offer. It will sustain me through the winter. . .somewhat.

Next stop: the pot ghetto...

;^)

Is that for when we run out of ground space?

Ha...no calling it a pot ghetto

Think of it as an experiment in growth patterns. Mom is so far okay with my tray of cuttings growing up for the garden.

I love used books on gardening. We have some great rummage sales that I have been really lucky finding interesting books. I also love Amazon for used books. I think I have half a shelf of just rose books.
