time for ordering/planting

Hello. All of the roses I have so far I ordered during spring/summer. If I order roses this fall, how do I determine the best shipping date? Last year we had such a mild winter-only a couple of hard freezes--but I am definitely in Zone 6.

Also, is anyone enough of a rose fanatic to care to be a mentor? I intend to join the Nashville ARS but it's nice to have an experienced email buddy. Just email me personally if you are interested.

I would suggest ordering in September for delivery in spring. Plant bare-root roses in the first half of March and potted roses the second half of April.

If you plant potted roses in fall, their soft growth will be killed back, usually around Dec. 1. Bare-roots may be planted at around that time in hopes that they stay dormant all winter; however, if December is warm enough for growth, you can lose these plants. It has happened to me.

Hi, PBRR! I'd err on the cautious side and pick a spring shipping date. I know last winter was very mild for a lot of us but you really can't count on that. For me the previous year we had record snows. So the weather is always a crap shoot.

I've never had good luck with fall planting. They always have died over that first winter never making it to bloom the next spring. So now I always wait for spring to plant.

Joining a local rose society is always your best way to get specific information on roses for your area. Even though we are in the same zone 6 I'm sure my Michigan winters are very different from your Tennessee ones. There are also very different disease pressures from place to place too so any advice I'd have would be based on what problems I encounter here and may not be helpful to you.

Afternoon PBRR, I thought I would connect with you because I too live in Nashville and have a garden in process. Unfortunately, I am light on experience currently, however, fortunately, I have a great rose resource with my mom who has been gardening for quite a long time. Please feel free to connect: natashacorrieri@gmail.com
