Hey S.E. Michiganders

We just moved here from coastal Oregon & I need some help on deciding what climbing rose to plant. I'm open to color & type, but would like fragrance & lots of rebloom without requiring tons of winter protection.
Any suggestions? Thanks!

Hi Peggy! Welcome to Michigan and Garden Web! I have a lot of roses but unfortunately no climbers at the moment. Well I do have a nice Dr. Huey, lol. I had climbing Peace and would not recommend it although others seem to love it. I never bloomed for me at all. I also had Dublin Bay which was a lovely repeating red. I killed it myself a couple of years ago by pruning it to the ground in the fall instead of waiting until spring. Hence the lovely Dr. Huey! Lessen learned! Otherwise it had wintered wonderfully for years. And in partial shade no less. I do have a Blaze but I don't really grow it as a climber. It's on a 4 ft. trellis out in the bed and grows more like a shrub. It winters very well but it is a once bloomer only. Other ones that I know are grown locally are Altissimo, Don Juan, Quadra, John Davis and Westerland but I can't tell you anything about them myself.

If you are interested there are several rose societies in the SE Michigan area. Send me a PM with where you live and I'll get you a contact for the closest one to you.

Thank you seil. I was thinking of Westerland as I grew it in Oregon. With the milder climate there it was a healthy, blooming monster. Altissimo was a blackspot magnet there. Quadra sounds interesting also.

Viking Queen grows good in my zone 4b NE . It grows up a trellis and the buds and blooms look great and has shiny green leaves.

Bill Radler, of Knockout fame, has introduced some climbers, white and red, which I suspect might be excellent. Milwaukee Calatrava, white, is said to be fragrant.

Kordes climbers seem to be going from strength to strength. I grow several of the older Kordesii climbers. I like them very much. I have heard that the newer introductions are even better. Northland Rosarium has a good selection.

Thanks for the suggestion on Viking Queen. I read up on it & it sounds awesome. When I lived in Oregon I ordered most of my roses from Northland Rosarium -- I prefer own-root, so I will study up on the Kordes again. Wasn't there a sight in Canada that had a large selection & that you could order from?

My favorite source from Canada is Palatine Roses but I don't know if they have own roots or not. I do know they use multiflora root stock.

My Viking Queen took a couple years to really get good . It is worth it. It is my best performer this summer growing up over the trellis. In the winter I have to lay it down and cover with leaves.
