 o
Japanese beetles , and plants going in rose garden

I hope this question makes sense ... I love Althea ( rose of Sharon ) and a local nursery has a new one called blueberry smoothie I really like . I'm planning my garden , mostly roses but some perrenials and a shrub or 2.
I remember in pa Japanese beetles seemed to really like the rose of Sharon blooms . If I plant this blueberry smoothie Althea with my roses , will it distract them and keep them from destroying my rose blooms ? Or will it just attract more ?
Thanks for the thoughts on this .

I doubt it would make much difference. But you might consider choosing a shrub that the beetles won't mess up.

For me, it seems to be the opposite...the JBs prefer my roses and aren't as prevalent on my Althea, hibiscus and crepe myrtles. They do still cause some damage to those, but nothing like the way they cover and annihilate my roses.

In my garden, Rose of Sharon and hardy Hibiscus are big JB magnets. also roses, clematis the north end of our property. I experimented by hand pump spraying Ortho product one hibiscus. JB's moved further in generally bypassing sprayed plant. You might notice if one direction the breeze brings them in moreso. They do stop at the 2nd Hibiscus , with or without blooms and population coming in further down the garden is filtered down to much less. It seems we need to sacrifice an area to them. But...like the beetle traps are we better off NOT having certain plants? Will JB's be much less? My hibiscus are 5 feet tall and my pride and joy.
I just can't surrender!!

In my garden they seem to eat any and everything in their path no matter what.

Ok , thanks ! I will probably buy it , even tho it's pricey and will get to 8 ft tall . It really is a violet blue and I love it ! I know new intros are priced accordingly but I can't resist .
