hello. we had the worst summer here in mn, days and days of hot, dry weather. not being that young anymore (ok, old) i did'nt work in my lovely perennial garden through All of july.
and the weeds grew and grew. now i am trying to recover and save plants that have been inundated by weeds. i started today with my roses. a few look ok but a few have no leaves left. funny, i think all are mordons. must be a pest of some kind. anyway what to do about them? should i cut them back by a third so they can put some leaves on? shoudl i fertilize them? i know in a good year they should not be putting energy into leaves in the fall but they are not going to have anything to generate energy for roots for the winter...what do you think? none are tea roses. thanks, andrea |

I would fertilize now. Fast nitrogen applied now will be used up by late September. I would not prune (unless maybe to remove twiggy tips) because there is energy stored in the canes. If there is adequate soil moisture, the roses will leaf out whether or not you prune.

clear as much weedage from around the trunks of the roses and water each rose really well - slowly trickle at least 2x10 litre cans (around 5 gallons) around each rose - I doubt you will need fertiliser - your roses have just temporarily gone into early dormancy because of drought and heat - there will be stored energy in the canes and roots and a good watering will encourage a new growth of leaves, but if you do feel you need to, try to go for something with nitrogen AND potassium such as tomato fertiliser (which will help with ripening and hardening the canes for winter).

I'm in Missouri and we have some sort of pest eating the leaves off our roses and fruit trees also. It happens toward the end of summer each year. I leave them be and they come back fine. As they can, they will grow new leaves. Weed around the roses and water them well so they can stay healthy.

Clean out the beds, keep them watered and, as Michael said, some fertilizer for now. When the weather cools they'll start to regrow their leaves and probably give you a nice fall flush. They're amazingly resilient and forgiving!

thank you all for replying. i did a bad, bad thing yesterday. i couldn't stand the way the the worst rose looked, NOT ONE LEAF so i Did cut it back. today fertilizer and water. am going to try and force a fall growth of leaves but will not let it/them bloom. they have the rest of aug, sept and oct. just won't be pretty again this year but i really would hate to lose any of them. we'll see. cross your fingers for my babies. thanks again, andi

No, it wasn't a bad, bad thing, not even a semi-bad thing. Your roses will be fine (I am doing the very same thing now as a couple are hideous), they will put out some growth, but thwy would anyway, once they got a bit of attention. They may well thank you, next year and the very, very worst thing to happen might be a slightly less amount of bloom (if it tended to bloom on 2nd year wood). Don't fret.

I would not fertilize the roses now because they are pretty stressed out due to the drought and high temperatures that you mentioned. Forget about pruning too since this will force them to regenerate. Just give them TLC; make sure that they have 3-4" of organic mulch and evenly moist soil. Once the temperatures go down, you can prune and fertilize. My roses have been battling little rain and temperatures in the 100s for over a month; bloom size is smaller than in Spring and I get less blooms. Once this month is history, they should recover. In the meantime, I check the soil moisture periodically and make sure they have enough mulch so I do not have to water often.
