Climbers

Hi there,

I'm very new to roses and gardening in general and I was hoping you could help me with my conundrum. I love climbers and have planted two Princes Trust/Harkness/Red Sox roses to grow on my 6-foot fences. In the first year the PT rose has flowered very freely, which is great, but coped very badly in the heat in that the petals seem to crisp up when it's too hot. Would you say this is normal behaviour, or is it only because the plant isn't fully established yet?

Also, I'd very much like to replace one of the plants with either Crimson Glory or Etoile d'Hollande, as I crave a strong fragrance. Which of the two has more of a bushy habit? I don't quite fancy spindly, leggy climbers with few leaves.

Also, both CG and EH grow to a significant height. Are they OK to use on 6-foot fences or will they outgrow them badly? Are they easy to keep to a manageable size?

Many thanks for your response - much appreciated as I've fallen madly in love with roses and want to do the right thing.
